Really bizarre stuff swept the baseball sector of the internet yesterday.

There’s this Cuban phenom named Yoenis Cespedes. He’s a 26 year old outfielder that is ready to become an MLB free agent and take his talents to the U.S. Cespedes is “arguably the best all-around player to come out of Cuba in a generation,” according to Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus. He’s expected to receive a deal in the $30MM range, similar to Aroldis Chapman‘s surprising deal with the Reds in early 2010. As you would expect for a price like that, he should apparently be able to become an instant big-time contributor.

Now, the Pirates are apparently one of the teams interested…but so is roughly half the league. We all know how unlikely it is for the Bucs to win some sort of bidding war that will inevitably take place here…but hey, it’s fun to speculate. If the Reds can pull it off, you never know…and this would be a more reasonable and feasible investment for the Pirates than the established big names on the free agent market. Still, don’t get your hopes up.

Anyway, the real reason I’m using so much space to discuss Cespedes is to post this incredibly bizarre video. It’s some sort of scouting video meant to put Yoenis’ skill on display…but it’s…weird. There’s a Star Wars-esque text intro, some really eclectic music selections to go along with BP highlights, some absolutely ABSURD workout footage, a couple catches behind the back in the outfield, more BP, more workouts, more music, etc. An aerial view of his travels around the globe is mixed in, ending somewhere in the middle of the U.S. with a big question mark. Then there’s the end, which (after some credits and a tribute to his mom) makes no sense at all. You just have to see it.

Here’s the video. It was taken down on YouTube on Monday but then re-posted here, so I don’t know if this will still work by the time you see this. If not, Goldstein has a humorous play-by-play of the whole thing here. It’s long, but worth it just for the laughs.

Seeing this dude in black and gold would be amazing.
