Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

You’ve got to give the Red Sox this much — they have mastered the art of the grotesque. How many teams in any sport in any country on any planet in any solar system would follow last September with what we just witnessed in the Motor City?

Losing to Justin Verlander is one thing, even when your bullpen blows the game, as the Sox did in the opener. Losing 10-0 when you’re impotent at the plate is another, as the Sox were in Game 2.

But yesterday simply took the cake. Twice the Sox took multi-run leads into Detroit’s final at-bat. A 10-7 lead in the ninth evaporated in the span of seven Alfredo Aceves pitches, the final one a homer shot out of a mortar by Miguel Cabrera.

The second was even worse, Mark Melancon jogging in from the ’pen with the memory of Thursday’s Opening Day failure still fresh in his mind. He pushed the Tigers to their last strike, then hung a curveball that Alex Avila blasted off the railing in the first row of the right field seats for a stunning, walkoff two-run homer.

The sight practically rivaled anything that happened last September, and that’s saying something. Thank God for the Red Sox that a three-game sweep does not a season make.

Herald: Setting new standards in bizarre failure

Admit it...you're thinking of pressing that button aren't you? Who would blame you? When Vicente Padilla was your second best pitcher in the series, the panic button looks mighty tempting.

Everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong. Beckett's thumb issues may or may not have caused the home run derby on Saturday. Aceves blowing a three run lead in seven pitches. Melancon failing to finish an inning twice in his first two appearances for the Sox. One would figure one of these issues would rear their ugly head..but not all of them.

The Sox have set a new record for reaching rockbottom in a measly three games. The only thing that we can all rest on is that there are 159 games for the Sox to get their act together... but for the sake of the fans, they should get it together sooner rather then later.
