Every morning we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump...

...Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Red Sox, Reds and Phillies are among the teams who have remained in contact with the veteran right-hander. While Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington told WEEI’s Alex Speier earlier this week that it’s “unlikely” they’ll add a starting pitcher prior to spring training, Morosi was told that the two sides continue to have “mutual interest” in one another. Oswalt is open to returning to Philadelphia, but the Phillies haven’t been aggressive adding rotation help this offseason.(...)

NBCSports.com: Red Sox and Phillies maintaining contact with Roy Oswalt

The odds of the Red Sox landing Oswalt are still not in their favor, but they are doing the right thing by maintaining some sort of contact with him. Oswalt has expressed interest in St. Louis and Texas, but if those preferred teams end up falling through, Boston will be right there to try to scoop him up. Some teams would give up and cut contact with a free-agent if their city is not on his list. Giving his agent a friendly ring here and there doesn't hurt, maybe a nice edible arrangement, anything to keep them happy.

If the Sox take my idea of sending a bouquet of fruit on occasion and it does come down to Boston and Philly, Oswalt's agent will have Boston at the top of his list because all of the tasty treats. Maybe that won't work as well as throwing a contract of a sizable dollar amount at him.

On Page 2, The Sox could have had Granderson in 2009.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that before the three-team deal that sent Granderson to the Yankees in December 2009, the Red Sox were very much interested in his services.

Daniel Barbarasi wrote that the Tigers asked Boston for centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and right-handed starter Clay Buchholz. The Red Sox declined, the teams discussed a straight Granderson-for-Ellsbury swap, nothing came to fruition, and Granderson was placed in pinstripes.

Herald: Curtis Granderson almost joined Red Sox before Yankees

I can't say I'm upset this deal didn't go down. I don't care that Granderson hit 41 homers and drove in 119, because Ellsbury was right there with him with 32 and 105. Ellsbury is also 2 years younger with a bit more speed. Checkmate.

I'm not going to spend any more time on this, because the Red Sox are better with Ellsbury and Buchholz.
