Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Buchholz, who has been on the disabled list since June 9, made his third rehab start, and second for the Pawtucket Red Sox, on Thursday, in the hopes of being pronounced ready to return to Boston. And while that official word will have to wait, what the righthander showed against the Rochester Red Wings seemed promising enough. “Everything went really smooth,” said Buchholz, one day after the birth of his second daughter, Landry Grace. “It was sort of a rush, but everything was good. I’m ready to get back up there [to Boston].” Buchholz went 3⅔ innings, threw 71 pitches (52 for strikes), allowing two runs in the PawSox’ 7-2 Game 2 playoff triumph, evening the best-of-five series. Working more on command than velocity (he hit 93 miles per hour on the radar gun just once), Buchholz struck out five, all on curveballs, and walked two. “I threw all my pitches,” said Buchholz, whose fastball and 12-to-6 curve are the prime weapons in his arsenal. “Whenever I reach back and try to throw something, I know it’s going to be there. It’s all about how the ball is moving out of my hand, and the release point.” Buchholz was successful in staying ahead of hitters, jumping to 0-and-2 counts seven times. Curiously, four of those batters wound up reaching base. Globe: Clay Buchholz looks solid in final rehab outing  Obviously the main story was last night's incredible (and incredibly long) game against the Yankees. Seriously, what a game. However, the more important news item is Buchholz finishing up his rehab assignment in Pawtucket last night. I know it's a cliche way to put it, but Buchholz coming back Tuesday is like a late season trade to push your team over the top. I'll be curious to see how Farrell handles the rotation. Will he start resting his starters an extra day with a six-man rotation? Or will he push one of the starters (most likely Dempster) to the back end of the bullpen? Given Dempster's experience coming out of the pen, I'm leaning toward the latter. However, I demand that Buchholz dazzles from the point he returns and throughout the playoffs. He's had far too long of an absence, seemingly on his own paranoia of his neck. Anything less of where he was prior to the DL will be a disappointment.  Rest of the links: Globe: Red Sox-Yankees game had a bit of everything | Globe: Red Sox Beat Yankees in 10 innings | Globe: Red Sox opponents have a fight on their hands | Globe: Jarrod Saltalamacchia eager to return to Red Sox lineup | Herald: Red Sox battle back to beat Yankees in 10th | Herald: Shane Victorinio, Jacoby Ellsbury deliver on vital play | Herald: Sox stay in character in Bronx | Herald: After 3rd rehab, Clay Buchholz good to go | Herald: Opener offered hints at resurgent season | Herald: Quintin Berry's speedy splash |
