Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. So much for using Andrew Bailey in low-pressure situations. After blowing three saves in a 10-day span, Bailey was displaced from the Red Sox’ closer role last Friday, at which time manager John Farrell admitted the best way to help Bailey through his struggles may be to pitch him when the outcome of a game isn’t hanging in the balance. But Farrell didn’t have much choice in the seventh inning here yesterday. Reluctant to use Junichi Tazawa for two innings after he had either warmed up or pitched in three of the last four days, and with lefties Andrew Miller and Craig Breslow reserved for later in the game, Farrell turned to Bailey. Sure enough, Bailey yielded Austin Jackson’s leadoff single and a one-out single to Miguel Cabrera before being lifted for Miller. The Detroit Tigers loaded the bases, and after Miller struck out Victor Martinez, he hit Jhonny Peralta with a two-strike pitch to force in the tying run in an eventual 7-5 loss. Bailey has allowed runs in four consecutive outings and five of his last six. Herald | Andrew Bailey back into action The best defense you could argue for using Andrew Bailey in the 7th against Detroit yesterday was the one offered by John Farrell. Essentially, they didn't have any other options. But this shows a lack of long-term planning by the manager, who is the man at the helm of one of the worst bullpens in the league (right now). If this team has title aspirations, it's going to need elite pitching in the bullpen, regardless of role. One of Farrell's major responsibilities is to make that happen, and given the talent and money already being spent on the bullpen, he needs to make it happen with the arms they already have. Removing Bailey from the closer role only to bring him in to face the top of the order against one of the best teams of the league in a close game is non-sensical. I don't care what the short-term situation is. I know you'd rather not use Tazawa for two innings, and for some reason it was really important to have two lefties saved for later. But putting Bailey in a more stressful situation than most closing opportunities does not equal progress. The Sox get a breather today, so hopefully the extra rest will allow Farrell time to map out a better plan for using Bailey. On page 2, Franklin Morales looks to be headed to the DL. Franklin Morales left Saturday night's game in the seventh inning after allowing a home run by Omar Infante. He felt pain in the front of his left shoulder in the area of his pectoral muscle. Manager John Farrell indicated that Morales would likely be placed on the disabled list on Sunday. Morales said the injury was similar to the one he suffered in April while pitching in a minor league game. That set him back for three weeks. “I feel it one pitch … the pitch to Infante,” Morales said. Globe | Morales may be headed back to the DL ...and of course, this development doesn't help everything I said about Bailey. The organization needs to make a quick decision about it and not keep a useless player on the active roster.
