Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
Lackey had gone 515 days without pitching in a real game. His right
elbow gave out by the end of the 2011 season, the ulnar collateral
ligament so frayed that doctors were surprised he found a way to get the
ball to the plate.
Tommy John reconstruction surgery and months of rehabilitation followed.
Lackey finally took the mound Saturday as the Red Sox opened their
spring training schedule with a 4-3 loss to a Tampa Bay Rays split squad
at JetBlue Park. He threw just one inning but rarely have 20 pitches
been so satisfying.
“I missed playing baseball," said Lackey. “It was fun being back out there.”
Lackey warmed up like he normally would. But there was one change to his usual routine.
“I kind of took a second before I went on the mound on the bench and
kind of reflected on the past year and a half,” he said. “It’s been a
lot of work. I’ve got to thank a lot of trainers, a lot of people that
helped me get back to this point. I was excited to be back out there.”
Lackey loaded the bases on 10 pitches, his excitement causing his
fastball to ride high in the strike zone. He walked Ben Zobrist before
Desmond Jennings singled. Lackey then hit Matt Joyce in the back.
“He was pretty charged up,” catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia said. “But then he settled down. It was the old Lack.”
Globe: John Lackey returns to the mound for Red Sox
Let me start by reflecting on the last line of that selected quote...WE DON'T WANT THE OLD LACK! Lackey changed some stuff up, got out of a jam, and looked decent in the spring training opener. He gave us hope for a new Lackey, and that is everything we want from him going into the season.
The sample size was small, with Lackey only throwing 20 pitches, but you could see the difference. We will obviously get a better idea of what the rebuilt John Lackey will be like over his next few starts.
Oh, and Jose Igleasias went deep in the game...good for him. Cue the love from the rest of the Ted's Army staff. He is not going to get any form me.

On Page 2, Clay Buchholz has no issues with him hamstring

Buchholz threw 20+ pitches in a "first inning" then sat down before
coming back for a "second inning" in which he worked on his secondary
pitches.
The righty said he had some kinks to work out from the stretch, but said they weren't related to his hamstring.
"There were no issues," said Buchholz. "I've been running the last few days. It's all good."

That is great news. That is pretty much all there is to say about that.

Vote: How Many Games Do You Think John Lackey Will Win This Season?
Say goodbye to the John Lackey of 2012 and hello to the new and improved Lackey of 2013.
After undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing all of last season, the big right-hander has shown up to spring training confident, excited and he even shed a few pounds, too. While his time in Boston has been overshadowed by injuries and less-than-impressive numbers, Lackey is ready for a fresh...
Jon Lester Impressive in Spring Debut, Must Keep Working Toward Returning to Ace Status for Red Sox
It’s only spring training.
Those words are muttered countless times year in and year out as some players thrive in camp while others fizzle out. The reason? It’s actually quite true.
Spring training means a variety of things for a variety of players. For minor leaguers invited to major league camp, it’s a chance to lay the groundwork for a big league call-up. For veterans,...
Jonny Gomes, David Ross to appear on "Swamp People"

Spring
training isn't just about hard work (although it should be after 2012), it's also about having fun and bonding as a
team. I personally can't think of a better way for the Red Sox to do just that, while down in
Fort Myers, then to reenact my favorite television show, "Swamp
People."

Jon Lester Tosses Two Perfect Innings in Encouraging First Outing of Spring Training (Video)
The Red Sox couldn’t have asked for much more from Jon Lester on Sunday.
The left-hander retired all six batters he faced in his first start of spring training — a 5-3 Boston win over St. Louis. Lester struggled through the most difficult campaign of his career last season, going 9-14 with a career-worst 4.82 ERA, and came into camp looking to put the tumultuous events of last...
Red Sox DH David Ortiz expects to be ready Opening Day
Earlier this month it appeared Boston Red Sox designated
hitter David Ortiz would be ready to go by Opening Day, as he recovered from an
Achilles injury that hampered him throughout the 2012 campaign. The slugger
continues on this projected timeframe, as he’s confident he’ll be ready for the
regular season opener, according to Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe.
Ortiz is...

The Boston Red Sox begin their spring training schedule against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday afternoon. With so many colorful heroes of Red Sox Nation’s glory days long gone, the Sox haven’t had many guys who were fun to watch. Things may be changing this spring — hell, even Dustin Pedroia has a Twitter account.

Mike Carp Set to Fight for Roster Spot, Hopes to Take Swing at Short AL East Porches (Video)
Mike Napoli may be slated to get the majority of the at-bats at first base, but there are a couple reasons it may make sense to have a dedicated backup.
For one, though he’s never suffered any symptoms from it, there’s no telling when the degenerative condition in Napoli’s hip may act up. Secondly, Napoli is probably best deployed in a platoon, taking most of his at-bats against...
Rays split with Red Sox, Pirates
The Tampa Bay Rays opened their spring training season on Saturday with a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates and a win against the Boston Red Sox. Roberto Hernandez and Jeff Niemann both pitched against the Pirates. Both needed just 23 pitches to get out of the first and second innings. Newcomers Wil Myers and James Loney went 0-3 combined in the 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh. The Rays...
Rays continue their hot hitting in win over Boston
The Tampa Bay Rays, just four games into spring, have been hitting the ball well. Monday, they continued their good hitting which resulted in a 6-3 win over the Boston Red Sox. Alex Cobb started for the Rays today. He threw 38 pitches in two innings and gave up a solo home run to Boston’s Dustin Pedroia in the first inning. Rays answered back with a two-run double by Yunel Escobar...

Could Pedro's Time Be Coming to a Close?
Pedro Martinez's presence in Red Sox camp has been felt from day one, and his contributions to the organization seem to be here for the long haul; however, the same can't be said about the other Pedro: Pedro Ciriaco.
By signing Stephen Drew in the off season, the Sox made it clear that they were not willing to give everyday at bats to Jose Iglesias; rather, he will...
Granderson Breaks His Arm, Red Sox Need to Take Advantage
The Red Sox seemed to be cursed from the start of Spring Training when Clay Buchholz went down with a strained hamstring in the first drill of the Spring. Fortunately, they avoided future calamity as the injury wasn't as bad as originally reported. The same good fortune can't be said for the Yankees, as it is being reported that Curtis Granderson has a broken forearm from...
