Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
That could be an important spot, since starting first baseman Mike
Napoli is not a great defender and the Sox would like someone who could
serve as a late-inning defensive replacement. Also, Napoli's
well-documented hip issues mean he may not always be available.
In a perfect world, the Sox would like that candidate to hit
lefthanded, to complement Napoli, who is righthanded. And, they'd prefer
that the player be able to contribute in the outfield. Involved
in the mix are Lyle Overbay, Mitch Maier, Daniel Nava and Mark
Hamilton. The Sox also had some discussions with outfielder Ryan
Sweeney, for now, there are no plans to have Sweeney try the position
and he remains exclusively an outfielder. "It's important
that we have another first baseman on the roster,'' said GM Ben
Cherington. "We think we have a good chance to find the solution with
the guys that are in here. It would be ideal (to have a person who could
play both first and the outfield). It needs to be someone who can
handle the position defensively and can hopefully produce against a
righty (pitcher)."
CSNNE: Red Sox notebook: first base options
Translation: The Sox are going to suck defensively at first this season. No disrespect to Napoli, Nava, Overbay, Maier, and Hamilton, but they are no Adrian Gonzalez. Sorry, I didn't mean to bring that name up.
There is also potential for an all-around weak first base this season. If Napoli's hip becomes an issue during the regular season, and the Sox are left with Overbay and Nava, there will be little offensive production from that spot. It is still very early in spring training, and the Sox are going to throw out a ton of possibilities at a handful of positions.
Still, expect little from first base.

On Page 2, More of the same on Bard's progress
In his previous spring trainings, few would have taken notice Daniel
Bard throwing live batting practice for the first time. But on Saturday,
when the righthander took the mound on Field 3, a large crowd gathered.
Red Sox manager John Farrell was watching, as were several members of
the baseball operations staff, general manager Ben Cherington among
them. Television cameras were on hand, too.
Once a premier relief pitcher, Bard became a starter last season and
quickly regressed. His velocity fell off sharply and then his control
vanished. So alarming were the results that he was sent to Triple A
Pawtucket for three months.
Bard is now back in the bullpen and has been throwing well since
arriving in camp. On Saturday, with minor leaguers Jeremy Hazelbaker and
Jonathan Diaz at the plate, Bard needed a few pitches before he started
to consistently throw strikes with some zip to them. It was a
productive session, another step.
“Felt good,” Bard said. “Just trying to work the kinks out. Once I
settled in, I felt fine. … The focus was just being in the strike zone
as much as possible, trying to be down with everything. The second half I
was pretty pleased with. I felt like I accomplished most of those
goals.”
Globe: A step forward for Daniel Bard
Ben Cherington followed those comments with a request to not make the Bard story and everyday thing. Good request. The nearly daily posts about Bard have become redundant. How many times can you write that a pitcher is looking better than last year? Apparently, a lot.
Give the guy a break and make a story out of it when huge steps are taken, not when a few extra people watch him pitch BP and are impressed.

Junichi Tazawa could be the ace the Red Sox have been searching for
If you look closely to the Red Sox pitching staff you could find one hidden gem, without much fanfare.
26 year old Junichi Tazawa is now three years removed from Tommy John surgery, and maybe he is the ace the Sox have been searching for.
Back in 2007 Craig Shipley and Jon Dibble of the Red Sox were the first scouts to see Tazawa in an industrial league in Japan. One game they...
Report: Red Sox Have Discussed Mike Carp as a Potential Backup Option
The Red Sox signed Lyle Overbay in the hopes that he can be a solid backup to Mike Napoli. He apparently isn’t the only option the club considered, though.
The Sox have also discussed the Mariners’ Mike Carp as a potential backup, according to The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo. Carp was designated for assignment last week.
Carp hit .213 in 164 at-bats last season, and is a career...
Red Sox Knuckleballer Steven Wright Ready to Work With Tim Wakefield, Appreciative of Support
Steven Wright has bounced around the minors for years. Now, as Wright embarks on another spring training, he’s turning to someone who carved out a very successful big league career for some advice.
Wright, who was acquired by the Red Sox last July, will soon meet Tim Wakefield. The two presumably will discuss the art of the knuckleball, which Wright began throwing as his primary...

Shane Victorino Says He’s Tired of Hearing About 2012 Red Sox Season (Video)
Shane Victorino wasn’t even wearing a Red Sox uniform during the 2012 season, but he says he’s already tired of hearing about last year in Boston.
To be sure, much of the talk surrounding the Sox is how they’ll be able to bounce back after a disappointing campaign, but with the positive attitude of Victorino, things are bound to get better. The Red Sox’ new right fielder...
Larry Lucchino predicts the end of Red Sox sellout streak
The Boston Red Sox have had sellouts for nearly 10 years. That could be coming to an end according to team president Larry Lucchino.
Lucchino believes the Red Sox sellout streak at Fenway Park will end sometime in April – maybe as early as the teams second game.
The Red Sox have sold out 793 games dating back to May, 15 2003. While the streak is the longest in Major League Baseball...
Andrew Bailey Hits ‘Shot of the Century’ to Defeat David Ortiz in Beautyrest Baggo Classic (Video)
The first round of the Beautyrest Baggo Classic is nearing its conclusion, and Andrew Bailey may have provided us with the highlight of the competition.
The reliever knocked in a pair of bean bags with a single toss on Monday, making up for his one-point effort in the first round and vaulting him into a tie with Mike Napoli for third place. The second man to go, David Ortiz, may...
Red Sox Injury News: Mike Napoli, David Ortiz
The Boston Red Sox are looking for a bounce-back year in 2013. For that to happen, their stars will need to be happy. The team gave David Ortiz a two-year deal this offseason despite his achilles problems, and they gave Mike Napoli a one-year deal despite his hip concerns. Both players have arrived in camp, and both are looking healthy.
According to Alex Speier of WEEI...

Is The N.Y. Yankee/ Boston Red Sox Rivalry Dying?
Hi, my name is Jeff Schubert; I am a lifelong New York Yankee fan, Boston Red Sox hater. (I feel like some sort of support group should over enthusiastically respond, HI JEFF!). Firstly, kudos to the national sports media...

Andrew Bailey Confident About Making Transition From Closer to Setup Role (Video)
Last season was a frustrating one for Red Sox reliever Andrew Bailey.

Though the Sox’ closer spot is now held by newcomer Joel Hanrahan, Bailey comes into this season fully healthy...
