Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. In anticipation of next month's Rule 5 draft, the Red Sox did some shuffling of their 40-man roster just before Tuesday's midnight deadline, adding six players and designating five others for assignment. Right-handed pitchers Allen Webster, Alex Wilson and Steven Wright, catchers Dan Butler and Christian Vazquez, and outfielder Alex Hassan were added to the 40-man roster, while infielder Ivan De Jesus, third baseman Danny Valencia and right-handed pitchers David Carpenter, Sandy Rosario and Zach Stewart were designated for assignment to clear space. Players not on the 40-man roster as of Tuesday midnight are eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 draft on Dec. 6 for $50,000. A player selected in the Rule 5 draft has to spend the entire ensuing season on the major-league roster of the team that claims him or else be returned to his original team for $25,000. Adding Wilson, converted from Pawtucket's rotation to the bullpen early in 2012, and Webster, who was a key piece of the blockbuster deal with the Dodgers, were considered no-brainers. Wright, a 28-year-old knuckleballer, was acquired from the Indians for Lars Anderson on July 31. The additions of Butler and Vazquez leave the Red Sox with five catchers on their 40-man, perhaps insurance in case Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Ryan Lavarnway get traded away. ESPNBoston | Sox add six to 40-man, DFA five others The Red Sox had a busy Tuesday night, making 11 roster moves before the Rule 5 deadline.  Many Sox media members seemed surprised by the number of moves; most expecting two or three players to be added. Others noted how the guys who were DFA'd had all been acquired recently, in fact, just in the last five months.  The biggest surprise was Hassan, who most analysts expected to be left off the roster. It seems clear why the Sox chose to keep him: Just in case the outfielder market gets out of control (as Torii Hunter's $26 million deal seems to suggest), the Sox need all the outfield depth they can get. Webster remains the most interesting player of the bunch. One of the key cogs in the Adrian Gonzalez deal, Webster has real upside as a starter, so much so that he leads the second group of Red Sox prospects (behind the Bogaerts/Barnes/Bradley trio), ranked no. 4 by SoxProspects. His progress within the Sox system will be fun to monitor.
