Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. With Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster struggling mightily, manager John Farrell summoned Steven Wright in the fourth inning of a marathon matinee against the Mariners. Seattle had already scored six runs and had two runners on. Kyle Seager greeted Wright with an RBI single and then . . . nothing. With the Red Sox in desperate need of a reliever who could take the heat off Craig Breslow, Junichi Tazawa and the rest of the middle relief corps, Wright fluttered to the fore. The knuckleballer shut out the Mariners for 52⁄3 innings and was prepared to go even longer, at least until the Red Sox took an 8-7 lead in the 10th. So he instead handed the ball to closer Koji Uehara, who slammed the door on Wright’s first big league victory, which comes in just his second big league appearance. “Today’s win is because of him,” Uehara saluted. Herald: Knuckler Steven Wright brilliant in 1st win Of all the pitchers on the Red Sox staff, who would have ever thought that Steven Wright would have emerged as a stopper and bail out the team? (I almost posted a pic of comedian Steven Wright, but that's been done way too much). Coming in for a shelled Ryan Dempster (allowed seven earned runs), Wright saved the day and the Sox bullpen throwing five and two-thirds innings while allowing only three hits, two walks, no earned runs, and struck out three. He bridged the gap to get to Uehara, as Nava put the Sox ahead in the 10th. We all know how valuable a knuckleballer is to a bullpen. If the knuckler is dancing the right way, the pitcher can go a long way to bail out his club. Wright may just be that guy. Did the Red Sox just solve their bullpen problem in one day? Probably not. But yesterday was a great step towards correcting the problem in from within.
