After a 10 day shut down, Zack Greinke returned to the mound on Tuesday night and looked like his usual, dominating self. He mowed down the Phillies to the tune of 7 innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, and 5 Ks. His performance certainly caused several GMs to have visions of That very well could be the last start Greinke makes in a Milwaukee Brewers uniform. ”Obviously something could happen, but I enjoy playing here,” Greinke told the Journal Sentinel after the game. “I don’t really look forward to being traded from this place, but it could happen. That’s just baseball. I won’t take it personal if it happens. They’ve got to do what they’ve got to do what’s best for the organzation.”

The contender with the most immediate need for a starting pitcher is the Texas Rangers. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Buster Olney tweeted, With Cole Hamels off the board, TEX effort to add an elite starter down to this: Josh Johnson pursuit; ask on Cliff Lee; maybe Greinke. The Rangers have concerns about all their starters not named Matt Harrison and seem destined to acquire a starter for the stretch run.

If not Texas, there are plenty of other teams interested in the dynamic Greinke. Those teams include the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals.

With Cole Hamels off the market, Zack Greinke is the biggest arm available to contending teams. Josh Johnson is as good as they get when healthy. Unfortunately, his career has been riddled by injuries. There just aren’t that many pitchers with an arsenal like the one Zack Greinke totes to the mound. He has a firm fastball in the 91-93 mph range and a knee buckling curve ball. He has even been known to confound batters with a 67 mph eephus pitch.

So far this season, Greinke is 9-3 with a 3.44 ERA with 122 strike outs in 123 innings pitched. With the 2009 AL Cy Young Award sitting on his mantle, Greinke shouldn’t suffer from any culture shock if traded to an American League club. Greinke will be a free agent at the end of the season.

The July 31st trade deadline is rapidly approaching and it would be a surprise if Greinke wasn’t dealt. He could be the difference maker for any team that acquires him.
