Matt Harvey arrived on the big league scene in dramatic fashion last week for the New York Mets and now it appears as though fellow pitching prospect Zack Wheeler may be making a jump of his own.  Wheeler, who has spent the entire season in Double-A with the Binghamton Mets, appears to be in line for a promotion to Triple-A this weekend.  According to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork:

After weighing whether to have Zack Wheeler make his Triple-A debut on the road, or give him one more start with Double-A Binghamton to allow Wheeler to make his Buffalo debut at home, the Mets have opted for the latter, a baseball source told ESPNNewYork.com.

Wheeler is due to pitch one last time for the B-Mets on Tuesday against Harrisburg, the Nats’ Double-A affiliate.

The top prospect then is expected to move to Buffalo, and make his Bisons debut Sunday against Washington’s Triple-A Syracuse affiliate.”

Mets GM Sandy Alderson has stated that Wheeler wouldn’t pitch in the majors this season, but this past weekend Kevin Kernan of the New York Post wrote that the front office may be wavering.

Though general manager Sandy Alderson has said Wheeler would not appear in The Show this season, the good news is the Mets, according to sources, constantly are re-evaluating the situation and the decision could be reversed.”

It’s hard to argue with how the Mets handled Matt Harvey as he was certainly prepared to excel in his debut against the Diamondbacks last Thursday, so one can only hope that their plan for the 22-year-old Wheeler also yields successful results.  Whether it’s this year or next, a future in which these two are part of the clubs rotation is not far off and regardless of how things turn out in 2012, they have already given fans something to look forward to.
