Right-hander Carlos Zambrano insists he will be ready for his next start Friday in Tampa -- even though he was taken out of his start Saturday night with one out in the third inning because of lower back stiffness.

Zambrano, who allowed seven runs in a 13-4 loss to the Rays, said he came to the park Saturday in discomfort but decided to pitch anyway.

"I learned something today," Zambrano said. "I learned that it's not about being a hero. It's about being smart."

Zambrano, who's 4-4 with a 3.55 ERA in 12 starts, said he should have "said something" to manager Ozzie Guillen.

Guillen said he "appreciates" Zambrano's resolve but added it was the second time this season the pitcher hasn't been upfront about discomfort he was experiencing.

"I wish players would trust me a little more," Guillen said. "I wish he could be more honest. Carlos told me he was OK twice, in Spanish and English."
