Nationals pitchers Jordan Zimmermann, Tom Gorzelanny and Tyler Clippard have agreed to one-year contracts with the team, avoiding arbitration. Zimmermann's deal is for $2.3 million, while Gorzelanny gets $3 million. The value of Clippard's contract wasn't immediately known Tuesday. Zimmermann, a right-hander, is expected to be Washington's No. 3 starter in 2012. Coming off right elbow surgery, he went 8-11 with a 3.18 ERA last season. Clippard made the All-Star team as a setup man last year, when the right-hander finished 3-0 with a 1.83 ERA in 72 appearances. Gorzelanny, a lefty, is slated for the bullpen this season. Two players exchanged arbitration figures with the Nationals: pitcher John Lannan asked for $5.7 million and was offered $5 million, while outfielder Michael Morse requested $5 million and was offered $3.5 million.

Have Nationals Fans Seen Their Last “Coffey Time”?

When Todd Coffey begins to warm up in the bullpen, most Washington Nationals fans know they will be in for something special.  As the call for Coffey to enter the game is made, he readies himself for the long trip to the mound, but he, unlike any other reliever, makes this trip differently.  Once the doors open to the field, the six foot four, 240-pound reliever charges in a full...

Flores and Nationals agree at $815,000

Catcher Jesus Flores and the Washington Nationals have agreed to an $815,000, one-year contract, a raise of $65,000. The 27-year-old hit .209 in 86 at-bats last year after missing the 2010 season following surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He was hit by a foul ball on May 9, 2009, returned for three at-bats that September and then had the operation. Washington...

Nationals Agree to Terms with Jesus Flores

In 2009, Jesus Flores was the catcher of the future for the Washington Nationals, and with good reason.  One unfortunate foul tip into his shoulder changed that quickly, as he missed the better part of the next 2 seasons recovering from the injury.  Today, Flores and the Nationals agreed to terms for a one-year deal, thus avoiding salary arbitration.  The financials of the deal...

Nationals Tie Knot With Gio Gonzalez

The Nationals have not been shy about their dealings with Gio Gonzalez. First, they dealt three of their top 10 prospects — including two of their top three — for the 26-year-old hurler. Then, over the weekend, the Nationals completed the bond, signing the lefty to a contract extension worth $42 million over the next five years. The contract also includes two club options...

Ankiel running out of teams but is he too expensive

As currently constructed the Mets bench isn't perfect, it seems to have a lack of power and duplication of services. Nickeas, Hairston, Turner, Cedeno and Loewen or Baxter.I'd use one of Turner's options and tuck him away in Buffalo while we see how Murphy does at 2B and replace him with a power hitting corner infielder, Zack Lutz or a FA agent who accepts a minor league...

Fielder still available as days dwindle before spring training

In the past few days, the Washington Nationals have been busy with housekeeping. They've extended Gio Gonzalez, a $42 million outlay that'll keep the left-hander in Washington through at least 2016. They've given hefty raises to Jordan Zimmermann and Tyler Clippard in their first years of arbitration, and they boosted ...
