Vin Mazzaro signs with Marlins, Rockies re-sign Jair Jurrjens

The Marlins have added another arm to their organization signing right hander Vin Mazzaro to a minor league contract. Mazzaro will also receive an invitation to spring training. Mazzaro, 28, spent most of the 2014 season at Triple-A Indianapolis for the Pirates where he posted a 2.52 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 34/20 K/BB ratio over 50 innings. Mazzaro appeared in five games at the big league...

News and notes: Guilmet, Tabata, Mazzaro, McGuiness

Sadly we are at the point where boring, nearly meaningless news like this warrants a post, as opposed to more postseason action. Oh well. The Pirates acquired relief pitcher Preston Guilmet from Baltimore for cash considerations. Guilmet has had a few short, unimpressive major league stints but has impressive K/BB numbers in the minors. You never know who will come out of the scrum...

Yankees 7, Pirates 1

The Pirates opened up their series at Yankee Stadium with a pretty putrid effort all around. All you need to know: Edinson Volquez gave up four homers and Vin Mazzaro allowed one more late. Two were cheap Yankee Stadium homers, but the short porch didn’t seem to help the Pirates when they were hitting. Volquez continues to struggle – although he didn’t walk anybody, which...

Roster moves

The Pirates shuffled the roster around on Saturday as the pitching staff continues to change quite a bit: #Pirates put Pimentel (shoulder) on DL, option Cumpton to Indy. Recall Hughes, select Mazzaro from @indyindians — Rob Biertempfel (@BiertempfelTrib) May 3, 2014 We hadn’t heard much about a shoulder issue for Stolmy Pimentel, but that’s somewhat concerning – and his...

Pirates Rumors: Vin Mazzaro likely to leave Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Pirates had a logjam in the bullpen for the entire Spring.  It was rumored the entire month that the Pirates might ship one of their relievers out if they got a good offer.  Evidently, no offer came and the Pirates were forced to pick who would lose out when they finalized rosters the past Friday.  The odd man out ended up being Vin Mazzaro.  He was designated...

Vin Mazzaro is the odd man out in the bullpen

The final roster decisions for Opening Day 2014 have been made by the Pirates today. Most of the moves were predictable; Chris Stewart and Jeff Locke are headed to the disabled list, Travis Ishikawa was put on the roster and Andy Oliver was outrighted to Triple-A (which means removed from the 40-man roster) to make room for him. The one big lingering decision was the final bullpen...
