Despite intense speculation that the greatest pound for pound mixed martial artist in the world would be leaving his division for a super fight later this year, it appears he will look to make it 11 consecutive successful  title defenses in a row instead.  Newsday broke the news earlier today that the longest reigning champion in UFC history will be defending his strap on July 6th against undefeated Long Island sensation Chris Weidman. Las Vegas, Nevada will be the setting for a title fight that will pit Silva, a man who holds a 16-0 UFC record, against the 9-0 Weidman, a fighter who has been widely regarded as the next big thing. When Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman battle for the UFC middleweight championship of the world it'll be just around one year's time since either man has competed in the 185 pound division. The last time we saw Silva defend his title he was capitalizing on one of the strangest looking spinning back fist attempts in the history of the sport. West Linn, Oregon superstar Chael Sonnen became the 20th victim of Silva's to succumb to the T(KO) finish in their highly anticipated rematch of a UFC 117 title fight that nearly crowned a new champion in Sonnen.  Just four days later on Fuel TV, Hofstra wrestling standout Chris Weidman delivered a message to everyone in the UFC middleweight division, up to and including Anderson Silva. Weidman's opponent, Mark "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" Munoz, would be next in line for Silva with a victory in San Jose - just one hour away from where he grew up and became a 2-time State Wrestling Champion in Vallejo. Unfortunately for Munoz, "The All American" Weidman had other plans. A nasty right elbow to the face of Munoz in the second round followed by enough unanswered punches to knockout, wake up, and knockout Munoz again, sent the MMA community asking themselves an all too familiar question - "Could this be the chosen one? Could this be the man to finally dethrone the king?" On July 6th in Las Vegas, Nevada that year old question will be answered.
