As former clutch Los Angeles Laker Robert Horry once famously stated, “Pressure can burst a pipe or pressure can make a diamond.” According to UFC president Dana White, Uriah Hall (pictured) simply cracked under the Octagon’s glaring spotlight on Saturday night.
“I don’t think he showboated, I think he mentally broke,” White said of Hall after the post-fight press conference. “You saw what he had this season [of "The Ultimate Fighter 17"], but you find out what a guy really has when you’re under pressure.
“When you’re under pressure, you find out who the Anderson Silvas and Georges St-Pierres are – those type of guys.”
Speaking of Silva, there were some ready to pit Hall against the UFC’s most decorated champion based off the highlight reel footage he created heading into the TUF finals. White certainly didn’t help derail the hoopla when he previously dubbed Hall “the most feared guy to come out of TUF, ever.”
Yeah, about that…
Despite being an overwhelming 4-to-1 odds-on favorite to dispose of Kelvin Gastelum and challenge Silva for his throne, it was Gastelum who left Las Vegas with a split decision victory, six-figure UFC contract and shiny new Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
Nonetheless, taking into account the buzz Hall created for himself on the reality show, the now-7-3 fighter will likely get another shot in the big leagues. But not before he gets right between the ears.
“He’s got a lot of skills, and his wrestling looked good [Saturday],” White added of Hall. “I mean, everything looked good, he’s just got to work on his head.
“I just told him that, ‘You’ve got to get that head straight. You’re not mean enough.’”
