"Lemme tell you something Mr. Stivic. You are a meathead. A meathead, dead from the neck up."-- Archie Bunker
Well, anyone who has watched The Mitrione Minute on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour knows that occasionally Mr. Mitrione blurs the line between responsible commentary and outrageous behavior. It’s a forum for him to tell off color jokes, and finally, he went too far and has been suspended by the UFC while they investigate the situation. Nice work, Mr. Mitrione, and thanks as always Ariel Helwani for the forum for him to hang himself. After a couple of jokes about Lloyd Irvin and rape, he decided to also throw in a Chris Brown/Rihanna joke and finally moved on to the subject of Fallon Fox, telling jokes comparing her to the Buffalo Bill character in Silence of the Lambs. When Helwani pressed as to why Mitrione hated Fox and continuously refereed to her as he, Mitrione let fly with, “She's not a he. He's a he. He's chromosomally a man. He had a gender change, not a sex change. He's still a man. He was a man for 31 years. Thirty-one years. That's a couple years younger than I am. He's a man. Six years of taking performance de-hancing drugs, you think is going to change all that? That's ridiculous.” He continued.
"That is a lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak, and I mean that. Because you lied on your license to beat up women. That's disgusting. You should be embarrassed yourself. And the fact that Florida licensed him because California licensed him or whoever the hell did it, it's an embarrassment to us as fighters, as a sport, and we all should protest that. The woman that's fighting him, props to you. I hope you beat his ass, and I hope he gets blackballed and never fights again, because that's disgusting and I'm appalled by that."The UFC wasted little time releasing a statement on their website stating “The UFC was appalled by the transphobic comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione today in an interview on the 'MMA Hour.' The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and -- as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr. Mitrione’s UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated. The UFC is a friend and ally of the LGBT community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with dignity and respect."
UFC Response to Meathead's Comments
What Mitrione said was dumb and anything close to a good point raised, was cancelled out by the content of his speech. That said, has he been somewhat misrepresented by people since this “news” broke? I think so. If you watch the video, he was being a smartass and blurring the line, like he always does. He got serious regarding Fox when he began talking about the fact that Matt feels like it’s a man, lying to try and fight women. Whether you agree or disagree with how the message was sent, it raises some interesting points. Fallon Fox lived a man on this planet for 31 years. He then had gender reassignment surgery and has been taking hormones to live in his new body as a woman. When applying for a license to compete in MMA, that little tidbit was left out. That’s where things get complicated. Should Fallon Fox be able to compete in a physical fight with women after undergoing this surgery? I don’t know. Should Fallon Fox have made that surgery known when applying for a license? ABSOLUTELY!
Matt will likely suffer a suspension, fines and community service for his commentary. We have both men and women in the UFC now, and the UFC has stood behind the first openly gay/lesbian fighter on its roster. Common sense would dictate that you don’t just go on a show and unload like he did. Common sense would also dictate that it’s not a good idea to have a forum for someone to cross the line for fun and viewership. The Mitrione Minute was like giving a three year old candy and ice cream for three hours and then expecting that kid to sit still and not fidget. Dana White has been involved with this before. He’s had his slip up where he said some things he shouldn’t have, and paid the political price and made the necessary apologies. The same should befall Matt Mitrione. He should not be fired, but rather be fined, possibly suspended. In the end, Meathead should remember, just because someone gives you a forum to act a fool and show your ass, doesn’t mean you should accept it. In fact, you should instead take a look at why it’s being offered. This isn’t the first time Matt has gone over the line on this segment. The MMA Hour is hoping it won’t be the last either.
