While most of the attention surrounding UFC 151′s cancellation centered around light heavyweight king Jon Jones’ decision to decline a last-second scrap against Chael Sonnen to salvage the September 1st show, the back page story involved the card’s lesser-known, lighter-paid fighters who were depending on the payday.
Thankfully for all of the athletes involved, every fight originally scheduled for last Saturday’s event has found a new home – outside of Dan Henderson, who will be riding the pine for several weeks rehabbing the torn MCL in his knee.
Furthermore, some of the show’s under card players received some sort of financial compensation.
“What happened is some of the guys are getting booked right away, they’ll fight here soon, the guys who are fighting later we’re compensating them,” UFC president Dana White shared during Tuesday’s interview with FUEL TV.
UFC 151′s 11 bouts have been scattered across four events. A couple of the scraps were postponed just a few weeks, while three of them will have to wait until the Octagon’s final primetime show of 2012 comes rolling around in December.
While White didn’t specify which fighters received a consolation paycheck, the athletes forced to postpone their bouts until November’s “UFC on FUEL TV: Franklin vs. Le” and December’s “UFC on FOX: Henderson vs. Diaz” likely received something.
Takeya Mizugaki (Pictured), who will now face Jeff Hougland on November 10th, and his team were unable to get refunds on their Las Vegas airfare and hotel accommodations this past weekend, so they made the most of it and left Japan just for kicks.
