Another week, another light UFC card in Brazil. The big name fighters seem to be blurred out by the unfamiliar Brazilians with no Wikipedia pages. What did we expect though? It's the week before the strongest fight card shown on free tv in history and is in the shadows of (injury bug allowing) the most stacked half-year of MMA ever seen. Anthony Pettis getting injured also didn't help. Still, it's not the worst card and certainly has some exciting fights throughout.
Ian "Uncle Creepy" McCall is one of the biggest names on show. He fights Iliarde Santos at flyweight on the televised prelims with, as he admits himself, his job on the line. Coming into the UFC, McCall was a highly touted champion who many people expected big things from. Although he was unlucky to be unbelievably robbed of a sudden victory round due to a scoring mistake by the Australian judges in his maiden bout against, now champion, Demetrious Johnson in Australia, McCall has gone on to lose the rematch and his subsequent fight against Joseph Benavidez.
On his day he is a top class fighter and is a match for anyone at this weight. If he can manage to put his well-publicized personal problems aside and get a run together then Saturday night could be the beginning of the road to a UFC title shot. Also in the flyweight division John Lineker takes on Brazilian new comer José Maria Tome in a fight which could very well decide the next number one contender. Between them, Tome and Lineker have only lost one fight in their last thirty-three combined. Expect a fast paced exciting back and forth brawl.
Headlining the prelims is the light-heavyweight battle between jiu-jitsu specialists Vinny Magalhaes and Anthony Perosh. Australia's Perosh is coming off of a years inactivity after his loss to Ryan Jimmo at UFC 149 whereas Magalhaes is returning to action following his loss to Phil Davis in a fight that the American dominated following months of pre-fight smack talk. The talk hasn't been as strong from Vinny this time around although he has admitted if he loses this fight he doesn't deserve to keep his job in the UFC. In truth, Magalhaes should win. He is one of the most talented jiu-jitsu practicioners in the UFC. If it hits the ground this fight is Vinny's for the taking.
Also in the light-heavyweight division, number one ranked Lyoto Machida takes on Phil Davis in the co-main event of the evening. As always when Machida fights the question is whether his opponent can get to him or not. Davis has the size, speed, athleticism and wrestling ability that would suggest its possible for him to put the Brazilian on the ground. Its not that easy though. Machida is the an elusive karate expert who has a long list of wrestling victims including Ryan Bader, Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans. Davis has never experienced somebody like Machida and if he does win it will be a real breakout career victory. His defeat by Rashad Evans in a mainly stand-up fight would suggest he may struggle with the speed of Machida. At the end of the day it all comes down to the takedown - if Davis can get it he will win. If he can't then Machida will win. It's as simple as that.
The main event see's the UFC's featherweight title put up for grabs as champion Jose Aldo takes on late replacement Chan Sung-Jung. Aldo is undefeated in his Zuffa career, beating the likes of Urijah Faber, Chad Mendes and Frankie Edgar, amongst an array of others, along the way. He is an expert in every area with some of the most constantly effective leg kicks in all of MMA. His opponent, "The Korean Zombie", is a tough-as-nails challenger with an iron will, never-say-die attitude and a dynamic ground game. It won't be an easy night but Aldo should win. He is simply better than TKZ in every department. The challenger won't be helped by a curtailed period of preparation and will be going for the win early. Expect it to be exciting for as long as it lasts.
Elsewhere on the card Brazilians Cezar Ferreira and Thiago “Marreta” Santos Ferreira throw down on the main card following the fascinating middleweight fight between the returning Thales Leites and the self proclaimed most exciting fighter in MMA, Tom Watson. Its another case of the takedown being all important as the ground favours Leites while the stand-up should go the way of the Brit.
Completing the card is the women's bout between Sheila Gaff and Amanda Nunes, Francimar Barroso vs. Ednaldo Oliveira as well as TUF veterans Neil Magny and Bristol Marunde taking on Sergio Moraes and Viscardi Andrade respectively.
BEST OF MAXIM
Well, sometimes weird fights end oddly, and I have a feeling both of these guys were walking into Rio de Janeiro injured, because Chan Sung Jung did not look like his usual self, and neither did Jose Aldo, who only threw one leg kick in the fight. Both men moved much slower than usual, but Jose looked like his usual awesome self in the technique department, but also looked to take...

UFC 163 was a very entertaining card, with a hint of controversy as well.
In the main event of the evening, it took Jose Aldo a little while to figure out Chan Sung Jung, but he was able to figure out the puzzle.
In the fourth round while throwing a punch, “The Korean Zombie” blew out his surgically repaired shoulder and the champion capitalized as Jose Aldo retained his UFC...
