Carl Edwards is the driver of the No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford. Edwards is in his ninth season as a fulltime driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Born in Columbia, Missouri, Edwards calls Kansas Speedway his home racetrack. I was fortunate enough to interview Edwards at his home racetrack and ask him some questions about the 2013 season and his career in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. He’s a class act and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Q: Sitting fifth in the point standings, how satisfied are you with the way the 2013 season is shaping up after the first seven races? Edwards: “So far so good. Any driver would like to be No. 1, but it is still early in the season and fifth is not bad.” Q: I assume your goal this year is to win the Championship. What do you think helped you prepare to win your first championship: Coming so close in 2011 or missing the Chase in 2012? Edwards: “Wow, that’s an interesting question. I would say last year when we ran so poorly. I know in life and in racing that I can learn more from my mistakes then I can from my successes, because it makes me dig deep, question what I am doing wrong and try to make adjustments. I think that the fact we ran poorly last year, it made us look really hard at our team and now I feel like I have a really great Crew Chief, team behind me and good cars to take to the racetrack.” Q: You won the only race this year by a Ford driver. How satisfied are you with Roush Fenway Racing’s transition to the Gen-6 car? Edwards: “First of all I like the new Gen-6 car. It looks a lot better, that’s huge and it races a lot better than we expected. The race at California proved it can race well on a big racetrack and create great races. The car has been a success so far and NASCAR said they are open to adjusting on the fly to make it even better. That can only be good for each team. Overall the transition has been a success.” Q: Kyle Busch has finished nine of the last 11 races in the top five. Do consider Kyle the driver you must beat to win the Championship or is there another driver on your radar? Edwards: “Kyle is doing really well this year, but it is way too early to pick which driver is the one to beat. You never know until the Chase begins who is going to be fast and have the car to beat each week.” Q: If you were to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship I am sure you would celebrate by doing some back flips. Edwards: “Yeah, I would do a big back flip.” Q. Does Jack Roush ever ask you to stop? Edwards: “Jack is fine with it. As long as we are winning races, he trusts me doing back flips.” Q: If you had one race left in your career, what racetrack would you race on and who would you be racing on the final lap for the win? Edwards: “I would love to be racing Mark Martin for a chance to win the Championship at Homestead. That would be awesome!” Edwards will start second in the STP 400 at Kansas Speedway. He could take another step towards winning his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship with a win on Sunday. Follow Chad Robb on Twitter @MrFantasyNASCAR.
