Corey Heim, Rajah Caruth involved in the ‘big one’ at Darlington
Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

The Truck Series race at Darlington just had the big one after Dean Thompson got loose and wrecked a number of trucks including Corey Heim’s. These NASCAR drivers avoided a stackup just to get taken out going out of the first two corners.

Corey Heim won both stages and was involved. Rajah Caruth charged from the rear to P2 at the end of Stage 2 and was involved. Matt Crafton got taken out as well in this wreck. A ton of destroyed race trucks. Jack Wood and Layne Riggs were also involved.

The incident happened on Lap 98 just as the final stage began.

This wreck took out a lot of good trucks. Dean Thompson got loose in a spot where Kyle Busch had wrecked in a similar way to start the race. The Lady in Black has a reputation for a reason, folks. These young drivers got a good reminder of that tonight.

When you get a wreck like this on a restart, it’s going to collect a bunch of trucks. The field almost had a stackup on the restart but they avoided that just to fall into the Thompson incident.

It is unfortunate that fast trucks got damaged here. Corey Heim and Rajah Caruth were going to put on a show. So, it will be up to Christian Eckes to win this race. While he couldn’t keep up with Heim, he now has a chance to going back-to-back at Darlington.

Corey Heim multiple laps down after sweeping stages

This race looked like it was going to be a lot like Kansas. First, Corey Heim fought off Kyle Busch. When Busch got loose and hit the inside wall, it gave Heim an open door. During the season, Busch has been one of Heim’s most difficult rivals on the track.

So far this season, Eckes and Heim have separated themselves. Eckes would have been in the mix for the win regardless. Now that Heim and others are out of the way, it is a clear path to the win. Ty Majeski, Grant Enfinger, and Ross Chastain will have something to say about that.

Heim now has Cup Series starts under his belt. He has a start with 23XI Racing lined up at Nashville this summer. So, it’s clear what his future is going to be. Drivers like Eckes are trying to show teams that he should be considered for a job, too.

This is going to be a big season for Corey Heim. However, his day at Darlington is more or less done. He isn’t going to be able to compete for the win in this race, but he’ll be right back at the front of the field at North Wilkesboro.
