Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon have to seriously start making up ground in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings after cut tires sent them each into the wall Sunday at Bristol.
For Stewart, his incident occurred on lap 10, when his left-rear tire shredded as he was trying to find a way to get down to the low line to pit. As soon as the tire shredded, Smoke’s car spun quickly around and slammed the front end into the wall. The damage to the rear from the tire debris was great as well, but it was a sheered brake line from the tire that ultimately sent the No. 14 car to the garage for extended repairs.
Stewart would get back on the track, but he was a non factor all day long, and ended up 31st – 36 laps off the pace. He heads to Fontana next week 24th in the point standings.
