Joe Gibbs gives his verdict on grandson Ty Gibbs’career best Cup race finish at Phoenix
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Last Sunday’s race at Phoenix was marked by the absulute dominace shown by Joe Gibbs Racing and the Toyota teams. All four JGR drivers led over 50 laps in the race and TRD combined led over 250 laps in the race, with significant contribution from 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick . No:20 Camry driver Christopher Bell came back from the back twice to win the race with a four seconds margin.

One of the stars of the day. alongside Bell, was the No:54 Camry racer Ty Gibbs. The young driver, who is just in his second ever full-time season produced his career best performance of a P3 finish after leading over 57 laps. His grandfather and the owner of JGR, Joe Gibbs was a proud and shared his hope that the young Gibbs will land his maiden NASCAR Cup race win soon.

Anybody out there with kids or grandkids knows what I'm talking about. No matter what the sport, it's part of your family and you love them to death and you want them to be successful at what they want to do. This is Ty's dream, I think from the time he was two (years old) he's been on something with wheels eight hours a day. It's a very tough climb, tough world, he's got to really work hard. We'll see if he can get it done Joe Gibbs said via NASCAR.com.

Gibbs has been one of the most consitent drivers so far in the 2024 season. He is yet to finish outside the top-20, with the worst result coming at Daytona, a P17. He so far has secured two top-5 runs, which is alredy half of the top-5s he secured in the whole of 2023. This coupled with the confidence he gained with the full-season experince in 2023, makes him one of drivers to look forwrad to this season.

Ty Gibbs admited he nedded a liitle bit more to win

Gibbs, while talking about the race after the event, pointed out that he needed a little bit more of evryting to win over Bell on Sunday. He added that the No:54 team lost some valuble points on the pit-road, but he is proud of teh recovery run to the front.

Yeah, it was a good day for our 54 team. Just needed a little bit more, kind of in a hole there a little bit, [lost] a couple points on pit road and got back to it. Good recovery, really good recovery. Ty Gibbs said.

The young driver also pointed out that the team strggled in the middle sector of the race and has look into it ahead of the next-race. If they are able to fix the issues and Gibbs reamain consistent, a maiden victory isn’t that far for him in 2024.
