Joey Gase slams Dawson Cram, JD Motorsports: ‘In the business of wrecking race cars’
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

During the Xfinity Series race at Richmond, Joey Gase was wrecked after a push from Dawson Cram in the JD Motorsports No. 4. Well, the NASCAR driver and team owner did not appreciate that very much.

Joey Gase ripped the rear bumper off his wrecked car and then proceeded to throw it at Cram. It was a moment of frustration for Gase, but understandable. He owns the car, he drives the car, and that’s an expensive mistake Cram made.

Not only that, Gase gave Cram a shot in the Xfinity Series to begin with. Now, he’s getting wrecked by him. After he got out of the care center, Gase laid into JD Motorsports and Cram.

“I think him just not having his head screwed on right,” Gase said. “You know I gave the kid his first opportunity ever in Xfinity and I know [team owner] Johnny Davis is in the business of wrecking race cars and we’re definitely not we’re a small team and racing hard for the lucky dog and apparently he just didn’t know how to lift. Maybe his throttle stuck, I don’t know.”

In the end, Dawson Cram was P25 and two laps down in this race. Joey Gase would finish as a DNF for P34. So, there was quite a discrepancy there. Gase was fighting to stay on the lead lap and maybe end up in the top-20, but it was cast aside once he was spun around.

This is a highlight we are probably going to see a few times in the future. I’m not sure if NASCAR will penalize Gase for this. There is an aspect of it that was dangerous, him running towards moving cars. However, we’ve seen drivers throw helmets and not get in trouble.

Joey Gase has bad day, Chandler Smith prevails

With as bad as Joey Gase’s day was, Chandler Smith had that good of a day. Smith was strong throughout the entire race. He didn’t have the speed at some of his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates had in the early going. However, that changed in the final stage.

Aric Almirola swept the opening stages. The No. 20 car was fast and Almirola is a great driver at Richmond. So, it wasn’t surprising to see him up front most of the day. When the final stage began, it was clear Almirola didn’t have enough to keep up with Smith.

After the race, Almirola admitted his car was too loose to keep up. While he couldn’t get the car adjusted to be as fast as it was in the opening stages, Smith was able to make adjustments. That No. 81 team worked on that car when they could and finally hit the right formula.

Chandler Smith now has two wins, three top-5s and a top-10 finish. His worst finish on the season was last week at COTA, P8. This latest win was a statement victory. Smith won at Richmond last season with Kaulig Racing. Now back again with Toyota and Joe Gibbs, he does it again.
