Kyle Petty labels Denny Hamlin as 'the class of his generation'
Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin is a curious case in NASCAR. Barring his no-championship win record, he sits among the top-10 drivers of all time in all other metrics. He is the driver with the most wins without a championship, with 54 wins in his Cup career that started in 2006. Only Kyle Busch has more wins that him among the active drivers.

He is currently having one of the best seasons of his NASCAR Cup career. Denny Hamlin has won three races in the first 11 events of 2024 and seems to be in line to win more, while chasing the elusive title. Ex-NASCAR driver Kyle Petty while discussing the No:11 driver’s win last Sunday at Dover, highlighted his legacy.

Petty pointed out that Hamlin is the class of his generation and is a top-10 guy ever in the sport. He highlighted how the No:11 Toyota driver has been to victory lane more than 20 times than his peers, Cup champions Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Larson and Joey Logano who also has had a similar career length and cars of same caliber.

We saw him make a mistake in Texas. He learned from that mistake. He comes to Dover, and he gets it done. He gets it done. He will go down in history as one of the greatest drivers. His peers, as we look at the guys who started at the same time — Martin Truex, same year. He has 20 more wins than Martin Truex. When we look at guys like Kyle Larson and Joey Logano, he has 20 more wins than these guys. He is the class of this generation. Believe me, he will be a top ten guy. Kyle Petty said via NASCAR.com.

Kyle Petty highlights Denny Hamlin’s racing prowess

With his win last week at Dover, Denny Hamlin is now tied with Lee Petty on the all-time win list. Lee is the grandfather of Kyle and father of Richard Petty. Hamlin is now the 12th driver ever in the sports history to get to the 54-win mark.

While talking about his grandfathers’ record being broken, Kyle Petty highlighted how good Hamlin’s race craft is. He pointed out that the TRD driver has evolved to someone who can win from any position in the track from a talented prodigy in 2006.

Denny’s that guy that came into the sport that had tons of talent and tons of speed, but that’s all he had, talent and speed. He’s taken that speed, he’s corralled it after all these years, and he’s taken that talent, and he’s become that guy, that has that magic bag of tricks. He can start anywhere, anytime and make something happen in those last five or six laps of the race. Kyle Petty said.

Denny Hamlin has a lot more to offer to the sport not just as a driver, but also as team owner and content creator His legacy is much bigger than most of his championship winning peers. 2024 might be the season he finally gets to leave the championship dream and extend his legacy more.
