Jeff Gordon was fined by NASCAR today $100,000 dollars and docked 25 points in the driver’s standings for his actions on Lap 310 in Sunday’s AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. He was in violation in sections 12-1 for actions detrimental to stock car racing for his incident with Clint Bowyer. Gordon was forced high off Turn 2 a few laps prior and ran into once again entering Turn 3. Gordon finally had enough after two more previous issues during the season with Bowyer and waited for him to catch back up to him. Once Bowyer reached him, Gordon hooked him below the racing groove in Turn 4 and sent the two into the outside SAFER barrier, taking Joey Logano with them. Many were critical of Gordon’s actions and thought he should be suspended for the season finale at Miami on Sunday. Gordon’s crew chief Alan Gustafson was also place on probation until December 31st for violating Section 9-4A (at all events, crew chief assumes responsibility of his driver, car owner and team members). Bowyer’s crew chief Brian Pattie was also penalized for violating sections 12-1 and 9-4A and fined $25,000 for that. “Following a thorough analysis of the actions that took place during Sunday’s race at Phoenix International Raceway, we have issued penalties based upon our review. The decisions announced today cover NASCAR’s full assessment of penalties for the incidents that occurred. There’s no doubt that a unique set of circumstances combined with a championship battle on the line resulted in raw emotions coming into play. We consider the penalties appropriate and those involved understand our decision and we expect them to abide by them,” said Robin Pemberton.
