Avondale, AZ- We all knew Joe Gibbs Racing would be the team to beat in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday (3PM/ABC/MRN). JGR has won three straight races here and trying to become the first team to ever win four in-a-row at the one-mile oval. They solidified their chances even more on Friday as they led the overall action in both practice sessions.
Kyle Busch, who swept both Phoenix Nationwide races last year was quickest today with a speed of 132.309 mph in his No. 54 Monster Energy Drink Toyota. Busch, set the time in the final five minutes of Final Practice as he was also third quickest in the opening session this morning.
Second today was Brian Scott in his No. 2 Whitetail Chevrolet. Scott, set a lap of 132.188 mph.
Busch’s teammate Matt Kenseth was third fastest with a time of 132.120 mph in his No. 20 Dollar General Toyota while Trevor Bayne and Ty Dillon rounded out the top five.
Last week’s winner Regan Smith was 16th in Final Practice and can thank his lap in session No. 1 if qualifying is rained out tomorrow. He will start inside the top 10 if so.
The race could be affected by rain as well as they’re calling for rain all day on Saturday. If that happens and qualifying and the race is rained out, they said they will start the race off of overall practice speeds and take the green flag Sunday night after the Sprint Cup Series race.
