When you think road course racing, you don’t necessarily think of Elliott Sadler. Sadler’s record in road racing isn’t that overly great, but he has been slowly turning the tide on his career performances.
Coming into this weekend’s Zippo 200 from Watkins Glen International, Sadler sits fourth in the Nationwide Series point standings. He also scored a top-10 performance earlier in the year when the series raced at Road America. Last year at the Glen, he was able to bring his car home in the 12th place.
It’s easy to think that Sadler might be enjoying this road racing thing that the series will do three times this year. Specifically, count Sadler among the fans of the Watkins Glen course.
“I really enjoy road course racing. Watkins Glen International is different than the other road courses on the schedule. I think that it is faster than Road America and Sonoma. I do have a lot of experience at Watkins Glen from racing in the Sprint Cup Series for so many years, and I have learned that if you make it through the s-curves and around the back-side of the carousel, you are doing well,” said Sadler.
So far in 2013, Sadler has been able to work his way from 11th in points to open the season to that fourth place that he sits in now. This past week at Iowa, he finished 8th, but still lost a spot in the points. “Giving up” are two words that don’t exist in Sadler and his team’s vocabulary.
“This OneMain Financial team has not given up all year, and we learned a lot from our first road course race at Road America that we are going to use at Watkins Glen,” commented Sadler.
The action gets underway on Friday with practice, then Saturday features qualifying with the Zippo 200 getting underway shortly after that. The race starts at 2:15 PM EST and can be seen on ABC.
