1. Dallas Mavericks (3rd in West, 5th in NBA)
Who is new: Lamar Odom, Vince Carter, Delonte West
Why are they here: The two things that made them different last from year’s past were Tyson Chandler and JJ Barea, both of whom are gone. They replaced two good pieces with one, in Odom, but then made typical previous Mavericks’ moves in signing name players (Carter, West) who are likely going to be unproductive.
Most important player: Brandon Haywood and Roddy Beaubois. These are the two in charge of replacing Chandler and Barea. Best of luck.
Outlook: It appears by letting Chandler and Barea walk that the Mavs are sacrificing this year to make a big run at Deron Williams or Dwight Howard next year. They are still good enough to make a run at the west crown, but I just don’t see them going all the way this year.
2. Memphis Grizzlies (4th in West, 6th in NBA)

No. 4: Dirk Nowitzki
James BucklinDirk Nowitzki- If I were basing my votes on the final half of last season plus the Playoffs, Dirk would have to be my #1. And I'm sure he got several top player votes. To be able to move and shoot the basketball like he does, at his size, is simply uncanny, and he has been nothing but super consistent for a long time. The only thing San Antonio Spurs fans want more than to win it all this year is for the Dallas Mavericks to lose their title as reigning NBA champions. The Mavs let some...
