Atlanta is reportedly very close to locking up its forward to a large deal: “Free-agent forward Marvin Williams said via text message Wednesday that a Yahoo! Sports report that he has reached agreement to remain a Hawk is premature but admitted the sides are ‘close.’ Hawks general manager Rick Sund wouldn’t comment on the negotiations Wednesday, but Williams told the AJC via text he would be in Atlanta next week for face-to-face talks. The Hawks are believed to have offered a contract worth $37.5 million over five seasons, with incentives that could push the package as high as $40 million.”

Last night, we said the Hawks and Marvin Williams had a deal. This morning, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said close, but no cigar. The numbers are supposedly about the same as those in the DONE!!! report, but the sides are still staring at each other from across the proverbial table.

The Atlanta Hawks and restricted free-agent forward Marvin Williams agreed in principle to a five-year contract worth about $40 million on Wednesday, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

I thought I'd wait until things were settled but that's apparently not very new media of me. If the years and money being reported (5 years, $37.5-40 million) are accurate this seems like a good deal for the Hawks whether the intend to keep Marvin Williams or use him as a trading chit. I'd be surprised if he, barring injury, fails to provide $8 million worth of production in any...
