The answer could come in the return on the deal if the expiring contract that is Erick Dampier gets moved for Tyson Chandler or Samuel Dalembert. (Marcus Camby is another interesting big man on the trade block, but there's no reason for the Clippers to give up his expring contract to get Dampier's.)
Ryan Hollins, a restricted free agent, has potential but can't be counted on to start for a playoff team at this point in his career. Brandon Bass and James Singleton both contributed for stretches at center last season, but the unrestricted free agents aren't big enough to start there on a regular basis.
If the Mavs move Dampier, they might be forced to find his replacement with the mid-level exception. They made a mid-level mistake with Gana Diop last summer. Let's look at the best big men on the mid-level market this summer.

Well, what he actually said was, "Jeder hat einen anderen Geschmack," which sounds infinitely more romantic. This came in conversation with Germany's Bild, Nowitzki's first interview since his pregnant ex-fiancée's arrest. He added: "Some people love Italian food, some don't." Among the other revelations: It sounds like poor Dirk was madly in...

Ranking the Mavs' potential trade targets
Big Ed Sefko identified five veterans on teams looking to dump salary that could be a match for the Mavs, who are actively shopping Jerry Stackhouse's buyout contract. Erick Dampier and his expiring contract are available, too, in a business-for-basketball deal.

Big B.J. Mullens headed to Big D
The Mavericks wanted to get Dirk Nowitzki some inside help, and did with the addition of 7-0 center B.J. Mullens of Ohio State.
Mullens, who averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds last season as a freshman, only started two games for the Buckeyes last season.
He's a project for sure, but could turn out to be a useful pro for the Mavs. He also sports some sweet facial hair.

Some good out of the gloom
It's truly a rancid wind that doesn't blow some good into somebody's life.
As bad as Dirk Nowitzki's breakup with Cristal Taylor has been this off-season, it appears to have cleared the way for Dirk to play in the Euroleague championships in Poland later this summer.
This is great news.
