Kobe Named MVP

ESPN announced late Friday, early Saturday for those on the east coast, that Kobe Bryant is this year's NBA MVP. It's been a long time coming, and no one can say he doesn't deserve it. Congrats, Kobe.

You really think he's more valuable to the Laker than Chris Paul is to the Hornets?

I won't take anything away from what Chris Paul has done. He deserved it as well, but only one person can win.

Sorry, Benjamin. I gotta disagree with you. Kobe is the man. MVP.

they couldnt have made it, without pau

Yes, Kobe has Pau. And Chris Paul has David West - who put up better numbers than Pau. And Garnett has Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. About the only guy even in the discussion who doesn't have ANYBODY is LeBron James. Still, I agree with the Kobe selection.

Jordan with Pippen, Shaq with Kobe, Magic with Kareem, Malone with Stockon, we can go on.

that's why I go with Lebron. He's the only person carrying a team. Everyone has different criteria though.

No. Kobe has Pau! i think you get my point

They were pretty good without Pau, too. Granted, Pau is awesome. But Kobe is legit regardless.

I agree - while Kobe had Pau, Paul had West, and Garnett had Pierce and Allen.

In the past I never thought that Kobe deserved it, even though I think he is one of the best to ever play the game, but this year...yeah he deserved it. As much as I love Chris Paul's game, Kobe is the truth, no doubt and this year he has definitely proven that he can be valuable to his team in more ways then one, by sharing the ball when necessary and taking over when necessary. Kobe is a pleasure to watch in this day of overrated superstars.

kobe had pau in the lineup for 27 games this year. chris paul had david west and tyson chandler for 76 and 79 games of the year (respectively).

Is Kobe the best player in the league? Yes. Therefore he deserves the MVP Trophy. PERIOD!!

Chris Webber's, "Looks like he Is thinking Oh I did know we didnt have anymore timeouts.

he deserves it

The closest we will ever have to M.J

Nobody ever really deserves the MVP award. Kobe's collection of past unawarded value plus his marginal contribution this year gets him the award (as it does for everybody who wins it every year). Chris Paul will win it if he keeps up his level of play - even if he doesn't deserve it in the year he gets it.

Kobe just sealed the deal on the Hall of Fame if he retires tomorrow.

I think the Hall for Kobe had been sealed already for a year or two now.

I am pretty sure Kobe was still a HOF'er even if he didnt win this award. Chris Paul is a great player, and he will win it one day it just wasnt today.

CP3 will win it before his career is over, no question about it.
This was Kobe's year and OF COURSE he deserved to win it.

Bryant is equally as valuable to the Lakers as Chris Paul is to the Hornets, in my opinion. I think people tend to lose site of that fact because he's been with them for so long. Take Kobe away from that team, you can be certain they would not be first in the West. Who knows if they'd even make the Playoffs? Don't get me wrong, his teammates are great...they all play well together and for the most part they all know their roles, but Kobe is still the heart of that team.

He is definitely MVP worthy.

Kobe IS the MVP there is no argument otherwise. It was long overdue because he is not a likeable guy.
There is no one more clutch in the league period.

Check out the "clutch" stats at 82games.com. There is another player more clutch than Kobe.

Stats are however you twist them. If you're defining clutch situations as close games in the 4th, you've got to ask yourself why LeBron has a much larger body of work from which to pull stats (215 minutes vs. 136 minutes). Maybe it's because more often than not you can't even keep it close with Kobe.

So is the argument that Kobe is on the better team or that he's more clutch? The final five-minute stats show that LeBron scores at a higher rate in the clutch than Kobe. Sure, LeBron has more close games, but these are per minute rates, so that shouldn't matter for comparison purposes.

I guess I used the wrong word - cause Ben Gordon is ahead of Chris Paul on that list.

I like him. :)

I know - I just think some people were hesitant to vote for him in previous years cause they don't care for his personality.
He has been so on point this season, though - you just can't deny him - like him or not.

I can't believe that voters rewarded his selfish and disloyal offseason with a MVP award this season. To me, being the "most valuable" requires you to be a good teammate, and he threw Andrew Bynum under the bus and was disinterested (unemotional, distant) during the first month of the season. If he were a good citizen for another year and the Lakers had a similar season, then I'd give it to him. But not until then.

boohoo. All you do on here is try and put as many players down, and talk about the bad refs, and the what ifs... How bout a congrats kobe. You are the best player in the league...

Congrats, Kobe, you are the best one-on-one player in the league.

No thats Lebron, Kobe can shoot the three, drive in when needed, and he plays great D. Lebron is the one who can not be stopped driving to the rim...

Last time I checked, being able to shoot the three, drive and play defense all come in handy when playing one-on-one. Kobe is the best one-on-one player right now, but LeBron is gaining.

Yea I figured from your pic that you were just a stat guy. But in one on one if you are able to drive to the hoop everytime like Lebron does then nothing else really matters. In one on one 3 pointers are desperation shots most of the time. I can see that you are not one to give props to anyone, but someday you might.

you forgot he jumped over a aston martin hahahahah..... did i spell aston correctly?

In one-on-one, three pointers count as three points...pretty useful if you want to open up the drive later on. And stop with the personal attacks. So I don't think your favorite player deserves the MVP this season after what he did this summer. Big whoop. I'm entitled to my opinion as are you.

in one-on-one three pointers count as two points.... lol

Nothing personal just what I see. Obviously I was right.

Under that scoring sytem, three-pointers are worth twice as much as a regular shot, making them even more important, so I'm not sure what your point is.

I like stats, but I played college ball for Bo Ryan, so I understand the game.

And I played under Coach K. What is your point? It can work any way you want.

Now you're just talking nonsense. Conversation is over.

If the award was all about character, I'd agree. Kobe wasn't the most stand-up guy last summer or at the beginning of the season. But, that's not what it's all about.

I agree - that's not what it's all about. I guess it's how much importance you place on that. I think Paul's season and Kobe's season were pretty close, so the "good teammate" factor put Paul over the top for me.

In this MVP race, there really wasn't a wrong answer or a clear cut winner. all the candidates have a *remotely* good supporting cast, and they all bettered their teams Astronomically. I really would have been satisfied with anyone of them winning. Congratulations to Kobe.

I'm not really mad at this. It's been 12 years for Pete's Sake! I tip my NEW ERA FITTED TO HIM.

CP3 should have been the MVP

Well deserved kobe is M.V.P.

no doubt he finally made his team better. you can't do it alone. it was a good turnaround for him. his skills are as great as before, but he's now applying them better

Kobe has waited long enough!! KOBE DESERVES IT FOR HIS GREAT YEAR!! 5-0.. lets continue to sweep the playoffs!

Get em Kobe. Keep these haters on edge.
He earned this one. More than any award Nash or Dirk won...Good overseas PR campaign NBA...back to the real.

Well I agreed with you up until the Nash comment!
Come on...you can't tell me that man didn't deserve his awards!?

He makes EVERYONE he plays with better. He's a magician.
He deserved it those years just as much as Kobe deserved his this year.

You get a thumbs up for that. Gotta represent the great white north!

they look good together!

Dirk and Nash weren't for PR, they were the best of th best in their respective years they received the award. Quit hatin'.

hahaha...that hair.

What were you thinking Stevie!?!

It's a shame they got knocked out by the Spurs. I think they match up better against the Hornets.

Well I do and don't agree with that statement.
I mean, the Suns WERE 0-4 against the Hornets this season. So it doesn't seem like we had much of an answer against them, but it looks like San Antonio doesn't either. PHX VS. NOH would have been a lot more fun to watch though, in my opinion. But anybody vs. PHX would have been fun to watch for me, I just want my Suns to win it all.

The Hornets are a great team though, one of the top three teams in the league right now...after Boston & the Lakers. In my opinion.
