Mark Rawden, and his associates over at Examiner.com (http://www.examiner.com), are running their own NBA Season Preview for each team in the NBA prior to the beginning of the regular season. Here's a look at the the 2009-10 Minnesota timberwolves, and a Q&A with Examiner Kyle McNary: (http://www.examiner.com/x-10630-Boston-Celtics-Examiner~y2009m10d1-NBA-Season-Preview-QA-with-Minneapolis-Sports-Examiner-Kyle-McNary) What are your thoughts about the Timberwolves as the season approaches? How do you feel about their playoff/title chances? Kyle McNary: I loved McHale as a player, but it was time for him to leave and I'm somewhat excited about the upcoming season with Rambis as head coach and Laimbeer as assistant. It almost pains me to root for those two guys as I was a huge Celtics fan growing up and didn't like either of them when they were with LA and Detroit, respectively. By the way, does this mean Rambis is finally even with McHale for the clothesline in '84? I like Reggie Theus too, and have heard good things about Dave Wohl. I think they have a good strong coaching staff to turn things around.I don't think the Wolves have much of a shot to make the playoffs, but I do think they could play close to .500 ball if all the stars are aligned.Do you feel that holes in the roster still need to be addressed, and if so, can they be addressed? KM: It's all holes! It's like swiss cheese! Seriously, the only position that's solid is power forward with Al Jefferson (he's also the best center we have). Otherwise, we have a few recycled players who may or may not have anything left. Love has some talent, but needs to quit pouting and play harder--I think Laimbeer can help him. Point guard looks shaky with an old-timer (Chucky Adkins) and a rookie (Jonny Flynn). Blount and Pecherov might be okay defensively at center, but neither has proven they can score in the NBA. Swingmen are a dime a dozen, so we might be okay there. How do you feel that they compare with the Celtics, and the rest of the NBA? KM: They don't compare with the Celtics at all. No depth, too young at key positions. My hope is that they can play .500 at home, but the road wins will be few and far between. Jefferson can match up with most big men in the league, but otherwise we'll be overmatched against many teams. The Wolves might have to take advantage of the zone defense because I don't think we'll be able to guard the better teams man to man. Again, with Laimbeer, the Pistons style of play might win us some games--slow tempo, half-court offense, fewer possessions, and tough defense. If the Celtics and Timberwolves make the Finals, how would you think the Timberwolves should attack Boston in a 7-game series? To read the rest of Mark's Q&A, click here.
