30-5. I should be jumping up and down for joy and praying to the basketball Jesus Larry Bird himself (or rather Kevin McHale), for the fact that the Celtics are relevant again. That they're beating opponents handily (thanks to an easier first half schedule than almost any other team), that they have three superstars and a mix of veteran talent playing on the cheap.
But I am not satisfied.
This team should be doing better. This team should be the odds on favorite to win #17 (and maybe they are in some circles), but I don't see it right now. Not the way we've been playing, not the way we've been coaching.
Doc Rivers - Doc's done a serviceable job this year especially given the hand he's been dealt. He's played to his strengths, being a player's coach, making sure their's harmony among the team (and it's not hard when KG, PP and Jesus Shuttlesworth are all on board). However, can we please, please, please get these guys some rest? Ray's averaging 39 minutes a game on his two bad ankles. KG's at 35, but he plays those 35 harder than anyone else in the league. and PP is over 38. The fact that they're averaging these types of minutes when we've won over 20 games by 10 points or more is frightening.
Danny Ainge - We need a veteran backup PG. We need a veteran backup PG. Gary Payton, Damon Stoudamire, Travis Best, hell get Marc Jackson out of the booth. Rondo's been great this year but as you can see from last night, Tony Allen is NOT a backup PG.
Ray Allen - Ray's had some tough nights this year and I'm sure being the 3rd option is tough for him, but he's got to step it up. I personally think he's still hurting and needs some more time off, he certainly doesn't need to be putting in the most minutes on the team.
Paul Pierce - This is a bit blasphemous I know considering all he's gone through, but I'm waiting for the honeymoon to be over this year with PP. He's actually one of my favorite Celtics of all time, but I'm just hoping we see this PP over the next five months, and that he continues to realize he doesn't have to be THE man at the end of close games.
All I'm saying guys is please. It's been so long since the Celtics mattered. It's been so long since I've been able to actually see the Celtics on national TV. We have two years to get #17 and this year seems to be our best chance. We may be 30-5, but we're no way near as prepared for a deep playoff run as the Spurs and Pistons are.
