Meh, close enough.
Media outlets everywhere are covering President Obama’s inauguration, and ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos had the gaffe of the day when he incorrectly identified NBA legend Bill Russell as actor Morgan Freeman as the camera panned the crowd. To be fair to Stephanopoulos, Freeman and Russell are both African-American men in their 70s with dazzling white beards, but that’s pretty well where the comparison ends. One is an 11-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer, the other is an Academy Award winning actor and voiceover superstar. For some reason I get this feeling that Stephanopoulos isn’t much of a sports fan, otherwise the Celtics hat Russell was sporting—with his No. 6 on it—might have been a dead giveaway that the person on-screen was more Bill Russell and less Morgan Freeman.
Credit Stephanopoulos with a quick recovery, but the damage has been done.
