Raptors big man Amir Johnson will go under the knife some time next week to repair what team president and GM Bryan Colangelo called a “ligament issue,” according to Doug Smith of the Toronto Star.
In the wake of Chris Bosh’s departure for Miami, Johnson played a key role in the Raptors’ frontcourt alongside Andrea Bargnani. Johnson responded to his expanded role by having a big season, averaging career highs in scoring and rebounds while leading the team in blocked shots. He was sidelined for the last week of the season by an ankle injury.
Johnson and the Raptors were hoping to avoid surgery, as was the case with Leandro Barbosa’s wrist ailment, but Johnson’s ankle reportedly was not healing on its own. The procedure is scheduled to take place next week in North Carolina, and Johnson is expected to be fully recovered by the time training camp starts in the fall.
