Most of the headlines and noise these past few days have been about Doc Rivers to the Clippers and how Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce might follow him there. But, that is all with the Clippers trying to build around Chris Paul and keep him happy by bringing in a top coach and some veteran help. But there is another wrinkle to this story. What if Chris Paul has other thoughts. ESPN is reporting that Chris Paul and Dwight Howard have been in contact throughout the off season so far about the possibility of becoming teammates next season and this is according to those ubiquitous league sources. As much as they would like to, I don't see the Clippers wanting to pay Paul, Griffin, and Howard max money and don't see how they would do it, along with hiring a big money coach like Doc Rivers. In order for it to happen at all, they would need a sign and trade with the Lakers and if they were willing to part with Blake Griffin, then perhaps that could happen. Griffin, who Chauncey Billups called too nice, and filler to the Lakers would open up the spot for Howard. Then they could bring in Doc Rivers and trade for KG to fill the PF spot that Griffin vacated. It would be more of a win now approach than a build for the future move, but if they don't make Chris Paul happy, they might not have either. Both Howard and Paul are happy in LA as they are Showtime kind of guys. I don't see either one relishing a move to Atlanta, but if they want to become teammates badly enough, the Hawks might be able to help make it happen. Atlanta, which is Howard's hometown, has the cap room to sign both players to maximum-salaried contracts. If Chris Paul leaves the Clippers to team up with Howard on the Hawks or another team, I'm not sure if they would still be interested in bringing Doc in. I have a feeling that their play for Doc is to make Chris Paul happy and try to keep him on the Clippers. They want to show they are making the moves to be a championship team. It sure does make things more interesting, as if things weren't interesting enough already. [Discuss on CG Forums!]
