As I posted a few times in the past weeks former North Carolina Basketball player Antawn Jamison had a major decision to make when it came to probably his last NBA contract as a player with five franchises all wanting him. From an article in Sports Illustrated it seems that the 14 year veteran has finally made a decision and will join the Los Angeles Lakers, which was one of five franchises that had shown interest in the 6’9″ forward. Of course with the franchise getting Steve Nash and now the former Heel you have to believe that this is a “one last shot” theory that they are implementing.

From a small blurp on the Charlotte Observer it says that the mix for Jamison’s services was also the Brooklyn Nets franchise, which “sources” said they were in the lead for Jamison. The california franchise was also trying to bring in either Elton Brand and Jermaine O’Neal to shore up the second unit bigs. The 36 year old forward scored 17.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game last year, and I see no reason why Jamison could not be just as much of a contributor this season while coming off the bench for head coach Mike Brown. One thing to remember is that coach Brown was with the Cavs when the franchise brought in the former Tar Heel to play in Cleveland, which means that the coach and the player know each other.

The Bobcats were recruiting free agent Jamison as both a power forward and a veteran mentor to a young team. Jamison was torn between the chance to play for his hometown team or to pursue a championship with what figures to be his last NBA contract.

In the end, for me, this might have been the third choice I had for the former North Carolina basketball star, who had his jersey retired for his career under head coach Dean Smith. Both the Heat, for the chance of getting that ring that Jamison is missing from his great career, and the Bobcats, who were the “home town” favorites’ choice, seemed to be the best places for the forward. But in the end the 14 year veteran will be playing for a team that does have a shot at getting to the NBA Championship and get the one thing that is missing for Jamison… a ring. As I do with all former Tar Heels, let me be the first to congratulate Antawn Jamison on this move and wish him all the best.
