Former Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight has been traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Brandon Jennings. Knight, center Slava Kravtsov and forward Khris Middleton are on their way to the Bucks as the Pistons sign Jennings to a 3-year/$24 million deal. The trades for Knight and Jennings would be the first move for each player as a professional. Jennings was drafted 10th overall in 2010 to Milwaukee, and Knight was drafted 8th overall by Detroit in 2011. The Pistons felt the need to acquire Jennings because he is a scoring point guard. Last season for the Bucks, Jennings averaged 17.5 points per game, as well as 6.5 assists and 3.1 rebounds. If you look at a comparison between the percentages of Knight and Jennings, you may find the trade to be a little ironic for the Pistons. Jennings is supposed to fill the need for a “scoring point guard” when the guy the Pistons traded away shoots a better percentage. Jennings only shoots a 39.4 career field goal percentage. On the flip side, Knight averages less points (13.0) and less assists (4.0) than Jennings, but shoots 40.7% from the field. I can’t help but wonder if Knight will make the Pistons regret their decision. At his age, Knight is one of the smartest point guards in the league. You can only write so many superlatives about the young man, and yet he probably deserves more. I can see Brandon Jennings being a better overall athlete than Knight, but the scoring really isn’t that much difference. Knight has been in the league for 2 years, compared to Jennings being a pro for 3 years in the U.S., and for 1 year in Europe. In the long run, this trade may not be as sure fire as Detroit hopes it to be.
