AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Cavaliers coach Byron Scott has elected to start Ramon Sessions at point guard over No. 1 overall draft pick Kyrie Irving for the first preseason game at Detroit. Here is what Scott said before the game: Somebody just said to me, When you had Chris Paul (in New Orleans), you gave him the ball. Well, Chris Paul had summer league. Chris Paul came a month early for training camp. Its no fault of Kyries -- the lockout and the break. He has a lot to learn, little things and big things. So I dont think its fair to just give him the ball. He has to earn my trust, and he has to earn that position. Scott added: (Irving) will play over 20 minutes. I want to see him out on the floor, see what he can do. I think all of us do. We still feel he was by far the best pick in the draft. So I feel very comfortable. I think its one of those where hes probably going to be a little nervous. Its his first NBA game. I know I was. I know A.C. (Austin Carr) was. So I dont think Kyries gonna be any different. But I think hell settle down in the second half, probably feel a lot better. What did Scott say to Irving before the game? Go out there and have fun. Run your team, focus on everything youve been working on and everything weve been talking about. Rome wasnt built in a day -- just take your time. But also let your natural instincts take over. If you see things that you can take advantage of, then take advantage of them. The Cavs will start Anderson Varejao at center, Antawn Jamison and Alonzo Gee at forward, and Sessions and Anthony Parker at guard. Forward Omri Casspi (knee) dressed but is not expected to play. Also, center Semih Erden (thumb), guard Daniel Gibson (pulled tooth) and guard Manny Harris (foot) did not make the trip. For the Pistons, Greg Monroe will start at center, with Charlie Villanueva and Damien Wilkins at forward. Ben Gordon and Will Bynum will start at guard. As an aside, this also marks Lawrence Franks first game as Pistons coach. He will bring No. 8 overall pick Brandon Knight, a 6-3 guard, off the bench.
