Celtics’ Jaylen Brown fires savagely confident claim about being unguardable vs Cavs

By and large, Boston Celtics superstar forward Jaylen Brown is having a fantastic second round in the 2024 NBA Playoffs. He was back at it again Monday night, as he helped Boston eke out a 109-102 road win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 4 of the series.

After a subpar showing in Boston’s shocking 118-94 home loss to the Cavs in Game 2, Brown has woken up. He has been seemingly unstoppable since, torching Cleveland for 28 points on 13/17 shooting from the floor in Game 3’s 106-93 win and 27 points in Game 4 while going 9/15 from the field.

Brown’s newfound success on offense can be mainly attributed to his brimming confidence opposite the Cavs’ defense. He let everyone know that in the postgame interview.

“I don’t think anybody over there can really guard me,” Brown said (h/t Jared Weiss of The Athletic).

Brown getting his rhythm back is bad *check that* terrible news for the Cavaliers. Over the last two games in the series, Brown has averaged 27.5 points on an incredible 68.8 percent success rate from the field. He also shot 66.7 percent from behind the arc in that span.

At some point, Brown is going to cool off, as his recent numbers are impossible to sustain in the long run, but he should also keep on striking while the iron is hot, so to speak. With the Cavaliers also banged up and missing their best rim protector in big man Jarrett Allen, Brown and the Celtics should take advantage and keep on challenging Cleveland’s interior defense for higher percentage attempts. Allen often provides a stout help defense for the Cavs, but without him, they are left so vulnerable inside against the high-powered Celtics attack.

Cleveland had a top-10 defense in terms of adjusted efficiency back in the regular season, but that’s just not manifesting enough versus the Celtics. The Cavaliers are also finding it difficult to match up and scheme against Brown, especially since they also have Jayson Tatum to worry about. They don’t have enough resources to spend defensively against those two talented wings, who are also still surrounded by an excellent support crew. The Cavs are just in a bad spot.

They are our X-factors. I think when they’re playing well…it makes us extremely tough to beat,” Brown told reporters about the impact of the Celtics’ other stars, mainly Jrue Holiday and Derrick White (via NBA TV).

As one of the highest-paid players in the league today, Brown is often expected to deliver, with or without Tatum alongside him on the court. Brown, who signed a massive $286.23 veteran player extension deal with the Celtics back in 2023, can help Boston finish things off in the second round and reserve a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals as soon as Wednesday when they return at TD Garden for Game 5.
