The last time the Celtics signed a shot-blocking force from the NBA Development League, he turned out to be a big part of their frontcourt rotation.
Jarvis Varnado is no Greg Stiemsma, but it made sense when the Celtics announced Monday that they had signed the 6-foot-9 forward, who played most recently with the Sioux Falls SkyForce in the D-League. Varnado, 24, was a second-round pick by the Miami Heat in 2010 after setting the NCAA record for blocked shots at Mississippi State.
Varnado was leading the NBADL with 3.9 blocks per game, along with 14.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. He has played in Italy and Israel but has never appeared in an NBA game.
The signing comes on the heels of 2012 first-round pick Fab Melo posting a triple-double of 15 points, 16 rebounds and 14 blocks for the Celtics’ D-League affiliate in Maine on Saturday.
Check out Varnado’s shot-blocking exploits in the video below.

One thing the Celtics desperately need...
Rookie Jared Sullinger Ties his Season Best The Boston Celtics, a team stuck in the mud for some of November and all of December, who have seemingly lost the defensive mentality they once held so dearly, who have been unable connect on the court or show any sign of team chemistry, have a little [...]
Thumb Injury Could Sideline Boston Celtics’ Chris Wilcox ESPN Boston’s Chris Forsberg tweeted that Doc Rivers said the Boston Celtics are expected to announced that Chris Wilcox will be sidelined with a thumb injury that could keep him out three to four weeks. Forsberg also tweeted that it is a ulnar collateral sprain, and [...]
MIAMI LeBron James now has a Top 40 of really great weeks.
For the 40th time in his 10-year career, the Miami Heat star Monday was named NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week. Nobody in NBA history has won more awards for Player of the Week, although it must be said that prior to 2001-02 there was one award per week rather than one for each conference.
It's the third time...
Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
I love that title, because the C’s sure have looked like they’ve had none at times this year. And as a Celtics fan, I expect the best every year, and we just haven’t seen it yet. So what’s it going to take...
Doc Rivers gave Chris Forsberg & the rest of the media the bad news at today’s practice in Waltham:
Wilcox hurt the thumb in Tuesday’s game vs the Bulls. It’s being called an “ulnar collateral sprain” of his right thumb. Doc says he’s been told Wilcox should be out somewhere from 3 to 4 weeks. Obviously this is not good for a team that is already struggling with...
Take a gander at some photos of Ray Allen's new beachfront pad. The Miami Heat guard has opted to rent the private home for a tidy $50,000 a month instead of paying the asking price of $13.9 million. The former Celtics guard currently has his house in Massachusetts up for sale for $5.2 million. Needless to say, his Coral Gables residence offers far less need for outerwear and...
MIAMI -- Chris Bosh didn't need a snooze button on his alarm clock in the summer of 2011.
When the buzzer sounded, Bosh was up. All he could think about were a bunch of guys in blue and white dancing around on his team's court.
Bosh's Miami Heat lost the 2011 NBA Finals 4-2 to the Dallas Mavericks. Making up for that spurred him on.
"Losing in the Finals, all...
For Christmas, at least, the Celtics played well. Jared Sullinger solidified himself as my hero, Rajon Rondo continued to show more aggression as a scorer, Gerald Wallace may or may not have wanted to brawl, Deron Williams (and Joe Johnson) used to be a lot better, and I don’t know if I said this before, but Sullinger’s my hero.I would write more, but I’m going to see Les Miserables...
