Clippers Coach Doc Rivers had the Lakers' championship banners covered and had his players' banners draped over them instead at Staples Center. Rivers said it will be done whenever it's the Clippers' home game in the arena they share with the Lakers. The Lakers have 12 championship banners Minneapolis has its five titles on one banner and 10 retired jerseys, including Chick Hearn's microphone retired jersey. "Well, I didn't look at it as the banner thing," Rivers maintained. "I just look at it as putting our guys up." Rivers had the banners of Jamal Crawford, Blake Griffin, J.J. Redick, DeAndre Jordan, Jared Dudley, Chris Paul and Matt Barnes all put up on the wall. The Kings' championship banner was still up on the opposite side of the arena. Rivers was asked why he didn't put up his banners on the same side as the Kings' banner. "Listen, I think this is our arena when we play," Rivers said. "So I just thought it would be good that we show our guys. No disrespect to them. But when we play, it's the Clippers' arena as far as I know." Jordan has been with the Clippers for five seasons and he always wondered why the Lakers had their banners at the forefront. "You've got to give those Lakers guys credit. They won championships so they have the right to put them up," Jordan said. "But at the same time, it doesn't say Lakers Arena outside. It says Staples." Clippers behind in some things Rivers said the Clippers are behind in working in some of their the small-ball system. "We haven't worked on it offensively or defensively," he said. "So if I had one thing that I would say that has been disappointing, that's been it, because I think you have to be really good at that." When Rivers does go to his small-ball team, Barnes or Dudley could be the power forward with Griffin or Jordan at center. "We don't want the small-ball to be the game of chicken where let's see who can outscore," Rivers said. "We want to score every time and get stops." Etc. Darren Collison had 31 points, but it wasn't enough to keep the Clippers from dropping a 94-84 exhibition game to the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night at Staples Center. Griffin, who missed the last two exhibitions because of a sore right ankle, had 18 points and six rebounds. Damian Lillard led Portland with 16 points. Willie Green didn't play, but Rivers said he is expected to play Saturday night against the Denver Nuggets in Las Vegas. Crawford started at shooting guard, but he's not expected to play Saturday night. --Broderick Turner

Doc Rivers to hide Lakers' title banners during Clippers games

Since leaving the Celtics for LA, Doc Rivers has said a lot of things that haven't sat well with Boston fans (examples A, B, and C for starters).  But now it appears he's finally doing something we'll enjoy: Per order of coach Rivers, during his team's home games at the Staples Center this season the Lakers championship banners (and retired numbers) that hang from...

Clippers Cover Up Lakers Banners At Staples Center

With Doc Rivers at the helm the Los Angeles Clippers are finally getting their own identity. Most would believe that the Lakers own the Staples Center and the Clippers are just the guy sleeping on the couch, however the team is trying to change that perspective. Doc Rivers’ Defensive Impact Already Being Felt with Los Angeles Clippers

For the last six years as head coach of the Boston Celtics, Doc Rivers’ teams hung their hat on the defensive end. They knew that in order to win and have their best chance to win – to win a title – they had to play defense. Now coaching the Los Angeles Clippers, Rivers has made his team buy in, and through the first five preseason games, has made his agenda clear – that...

Screengrab Snafu: Something looks different about Doc Rivers...

Traveling from Boston to Los Angeles sure has changed new Clippers head coach Doc Rivers, hasn't it?  Granted it's been a stressful offseason, what with the Bill Simmons feud and all, but he's aged quite a bit.  He's also somehow transformed into venerable Clippers play by play man Ralph Lawler.  Oh me, oh my indeed! The Clippers are sure putting a lot of eggs into one 6-foot-11, 250-pound basket. In addition to touting center DeAndre Jordan as a member of the Clippers’ new “Big Three” along with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul, the team plans to put Jordan on the cover of its media guide, according to The Los Angeles Times. The Lakers Nation and their spokesman Nick Young would like to ask Doc Rivers who the hell he thinks he is. Chris Paul drops 40 on Nuggets In Preseason (VIDEO)

Doc Rivers told CP3 “he was nothing” during their first conversation as player and coach, and now Chris Paul is hell bent on proving to Rivers just how good he really is. I’m not sure if it was the powder blue uniform with the sleeves, or the fact that he saw a quality guard in Ty Lawson across from him, but Paul went off on the Nuggets Saturday night. Paul was 13-of-21 shooting...

The Los Angeles Clippers have long tried to get out of the Lakers' shadow. They have played in the same building since the 2000 season and are the second team in that famous city in California. They have long fought for their place in the spotlight. The problem is the Clippers did not really deserve it until Chris Paul arrived two years ago and turned the Clippers from NBA...

Afternoon Delight: Not Quite the Same

So LeBron James thinks that the criticism Heat teammate and former Celtic Ray Allen received in the past from Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Doc Rivers for leaving Boston is preposterous (his exact words began with, "Wow".) - specially since the latter three are now former Celtics as well.  Well, as our colleague Mark details here (with an update of Truth & KG'...
