The Indiana Pacers agreed to a contract with Andrew Bynum just a couple weeks ago, and there has been much speculation about what kind of impact he will have. There are two completely different things that could come from this deal. On one side, the Pacers could be getting a locker room cancer that they will have to cut. That being said, the Pacers also could be getting a great deal at a cheap price for a player who could help them make a run at a championship. Could Andrew Bynum be the X-Factor for the Indiana Pacers’ title chances? The Pacers have a much improved bench from last season, but they still have some work that needs to be done. Replacing Ian Mahinmi with Andrew Bynum will add a much needed offensive punch to the bench, and if he stays healthy, will make a difference on the defensive side of the basketball. Bynum played in 24 games this season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, starting 19 of those appearances. He averaged 8.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks in those games, and showed that he still can play at a high level on a couple occasions. The Pacers are not getting the Los Angeles Lakers version of Bynum, but they are getting a player who can still play at a high level. Indiana is currently the best team in the Eastern Conference, and their only competition record-wise right now is the Miami Heat. The Heat have had issues defending Indiana’s front-court over the past two seasons, and the addition of Bynum will make that even more difficult for them. There are many reasons that the Pacers signed Bynum, but perhaps the biggest one is that his signing takes him off the market for the Heat. The question remains whether or not Andrew Bynum could be the X-Factor for the Indiana Pacers this season. It is very possible that the Pacers will use him on the offensive side of the basketball a good amount down the stretch of the regular season and into the playoffs. Indiana’s one weakness is their scoring off of the bench, and Bynum very well could be the answer to that weakness.
