The Dallas Mavericks started their 2013 season with the beginning of the preseason, first facing off with the New Orleans Pelicans at home on Oct. 7 and then going to Memphis for a game with the Grizzlies on Oct. 9. The Mavs finished the opening week 1-1, but may have lost more than just one game. Backup center Brandan Wright was 7-of-8 from the field and scored 14 points in just under 20 minutes against the Pelicans, but suffered a fractured shoulder during practice on Oct. 8. Wright didn’t suit up for the Mavs game with the Griz. Without its star point guard Jose Calderon, Dallas went into its preseason opener with rookie Gal Mekel at the one, but the rook committed five turnovers to go along with the team’s 28 total turnovers. The Mavericks shot seven percent better from the field than the Pelicans, but the Pelicans outscored Dallas by seven in the final quarter for a 94-92 win. Last year’s No. 1 pick Anthony Davis scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed seven boards while second-year guard Brian Roberts scored all of his 17 points in the fourth. The Mavs were up 42-39 at the half. Dirk Nowitzki scored just six points and had four rebounds and three assists in 22 minutes, sitting out for the fourth quarter. Another new point guard, Monta Ellis had 13 points and a game-high seven dimes. Dallas fared much better against the Griz, up fifteen after the third, then withheld a Memphis rally for a 95-90 victory. Nowitzki scored 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added six boards and three assists. New center, Samuel Dalembert, who saw limited action in foul trouble versus New Orleans, had 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Ellis also had 11 points and dished out eight more dimes as he played point for most of the game. The Mavs committed 16 turnovers and shot 45.6 percent from the field. As for Wright, it doesn’t appear the third-year Maverick doesn’t need surgery and will be evaluated weekly. There is no timetable for his return. The next preseason game will be against the Magic on Oct. 14. Dallas will open the 2013 regular season against the Atlanta Hawks on Oct. 30.

Mavs' real concerns behind Brandan Wright's MRI

Rick Carlisle likes the eyelid tattoos of Mavs' hopeful Renaldo Balkman

Finding a way to catch the eye of a front office or coaching staff when you're a fringe player in an NBA training camp can be really hard to do. For the most part teams leave a little leeway when it comes to adding to the roster with non-guaranteed contracts to fill out the 15 spots going into training camp but it doesn't mean they'll definitely take someone. You have...

Mavericks' Wayne Ellington is a prime breakout candidate

Too many ifs are a bad thing for any sports team going into the season. Franchises that rely on a lot of unknowns coming up rosy traditionally end up disappointed. The Mavericks have their share of variables but one area where the “if” seems like it has a fighting chance to turn out with a positive result is the theory that they will become a solid playoff team if they get...

Mavericks missing Calderon’s touch at the point

They improved a bit in their second preseason game Wednesday when they held on to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 95-90. But the Dallas Mavericks’ offense won’t start running like a well-oiled machine until Jose Calderon starts running the show. Calderon missed the first two preseason games and will also miss Monday’s home game against the Orlando Magic with a strained left...

Renaldo Balkman Takes Tattoos To A New Level

If there’s one thing NBA players love, it’s tattoos. However, Renaldo Balkman recently had his eyelids tattoo’d. At least the Mavericks will know if he is ever sleeping on the bench. At least his tats say “hustle”, and “harder”, right? And when I say love, I mean L-O-V-E.   [cbssports] Article found on: Next Impulse Sports

Nowitzki ramps up offseason prep to battle Father Time

It’s hard to imagine anybody working harder than Dirk Nowitzki to get ready for this NBA season. He did more than he’s ever done in a summer with the possible exception of when he was playing internationally in the Olympics or World Championships. And it still hasn’t given him any sort of comfort level. Nowitzki said he can’t get around the fact that the older he gets —...
