You just knew that there was insufficient drama and “news content” associated with the NBA lockout/negotiations when all you saw on TV for a week was David Stern and/or Derek Fisher entering an office building with somber looks on their faces. People get tired of that; someone out there needed to do something to spice this up lest people pay even less attention to what is not happening there. One of the go-to-guys in such a circumstance is Bryant Gumbel and he dusted off an old view of his and applied it here. On his HBO program, he likened David Stern to a modern day plantation owner who sought to be viewed as the benign overseer of the laborers. [Aside: Bryant Gumbel did the same sort of thing in previous tense moments when the NFL and NFLPA were negotiating. As I recall he referred to Gene Upshaw as the Commissioner’s “personal pet” who was led around on a leash, but I do not remember the full context of that remark.] Forget the ludicrous comparison between an NBA player ...
