NEW YORK -- They were coming off a three-game road trip, their first loss of the season and faced an early game Sunday, and the New York Knicks found themselves struggling to score in the first half. No matter. These Knicks have quickly prided themselves on forming a brick wall on defense, from their defensive-minded coach Mike Woodson, all the way to their notoriously offensively obsessed star, Carmelo Anthony. So it was once again the defense that sparked the Knicks in their 88-76 win over the Indiana Pacers at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks limited the poor-shooting Pacers to just 30 points in the first half on 26.3 percent shooting from the field. Struggling to score without injured top scorer Danny Granger recently, the Pacers got 20 points from Paul George, 14 from David West and little else offensively. Afterwards, most of the Knicks (7-1) talked proudly of creating what has become a stifling defense, with center Rasheed Wallace saying that when "everyone buys...

In this column I will be talking about the most surprising teams to begin the NBA year, and the most disappointing teams...

Knicks Getting a Boost From Their Bench In Form of Defense

Often times, NBA teams like to fill their bench out with players who can score in bunches. Such an offensive boost is necessary when sitting down a team's top scorers. And over the years, the NBA's top scorer from a second unit has been continuously recognized as the league's "Sixth Man of the Year."In the early goings of the season, this NBA campaign isn'...

Donnie Walsh Spot On With Melo Assessment

Donnie Walsh may no longer be with the Knicks, but it is clear that no bridges have been burned with his former employer. Walsh spoke with New York reporters about the Knicks prior to their 88-76 victory over the Pacers, his current employer, and touched base on a number of topics regarding his old team.  Walsh spoke highly about the Knicks’ early success, and more specifically...

'Melo, Knicks take down Pacers

Carmelo Anthony had 26 points and nine rebounds, and the New York Knicks bounced back from their first loss of the season, beating the Indiana Pacers 88-76 on Sunday. JR Smith added 13 points and Raymond Felton had 11 for the Knicks in their only home game in a span of seven games. After falling 105-95 at Memphis on Friday, the Knicks (7-1) go right back on the road to start another...

Knicks 88, Pacers 76

NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks responded to their first loss of the season by more closely resembling the team that started the season unbeaten after six games. The Knicks used a stifling defense coupled with some poor shooting by the Indiana Pacers, 26 points from top scorer Carmelo Anthony and solid play from several of his teammates to top Indiana 88-76 at Madison Square Garden...

The Assist: Jason Kidd should never rock a headband

The Knicks bounced back from their loss at Memphis on Friday to beat up on the Pacers. In the first quarter, Knicks veteran Jason Kidd collided with Indiana guard Lance Stephenson. Stephenson’s tooth hit  Kidd’s head leaving behind a cut that would require seven stitches and a headband to keep blood out of his eyes while [...]

Celtkicks: Inside Sneaker Con New York

I love sneakers, and I’ve been called a sneaker-head, but I learned this past weekend that I’m nowhere near the sneaker-head that has come to define the recent explosion in sneaker collecting. I am to true sneaker-heads what the occasional pot smoker is to Charlie Sheen.  I love my kicks, and I can’t resist impulse purchases when I see something I like.  But I wear my sneakers...

New York ballin’! Nets and Knicks off to good starts

The Knicks and Nets have things going in the right direction. Both are off to great starts with the Knicks being the last unbeaten team in the league until losing to a tough Memphis squad on Friday. The 6-1 start is one of the best in team history and they really seem to be putting things together after the last two disappointing first round playoff exits. The team has seen back...

Starting 5: Perfect no more

Every morning, we will give you five things from the night before in the NBA to start your day. 1: Knicks go down New York was not going 82-0. That is virtually impossible with the way the NBA schedule is constructed. Going 6-0 was surprise in itself for a team that seemingly lacked offensive fluidity and was nominally good at defense, but hardly elite. In the first weeks of...

They would end the losing streak, defeating a storied division rival...

Pacers-Knicks Preview

After falling victim to frustration in their first loss of the season, the New York Knicks will look to channel their emotions a little differently. They'll try to bounce back Sunday against the Indiana Pacers, who have struggled to score but seemed to find some answers following some offensive tweaks. The Knicks (6-1) return home hoping to start a new winning streak while...

Amar'e Stoudemire may not start for Knicks after return

New York Knicks coach Mike Woodson was asked Tuesday during the team's morning shootaround if Amar'e Stoudemire will return as starting power forward.  He wouldn't really say. “I’m going to address that when we get to that point,’’ Woodson said at New Orleans Arena via The New York Post. “Right now I’m just taking it a day at a time and work the guys we...

Here's your soundtrack for this one. Play in the background, or not. Tonight in Memphis, the New York Knicks did something they haven't done all year, and something that every other team has done already. They lost, for the first time, and while the result wasn't in any way surprising (they were on the down slope of a back to back, they had extended a lot of energy...
