Doc Rivers reaffirmed why O.J. Mayo didn’t become a Celtic last season. On WEEI Thursday morning, Doc Rivers said Memphis backed out of the deal that that would have swapped Mayo for Ray Allen. Doc on old Ray/Mayo deal: "Memphis pulled plug, not us. … O.J.'s so much younger. That's a trade we really thought we had to look at hard."— Ben Rohrbach (@brohrbach) January 31, 2013 One could argue this trade that almost went down was the final straw that broke Allen’s back and why he is now with the Miami Heat. Both Allen and Mayo were on expiring contracts so whether or not Mayo would have re-upped in Boston is up for debate. The Celtics did approach Mayo in the offseason as a free agent, but they had already signed Jason Terry and decided to trade for Courtney Lee instead of wait on Mayo to decide. Mayo is having a pretty good year in Dallas averaging 17.8 ppg, 4.3 apg, 3.8 rpg and a PER of 16.51. He does have a player option for next year so if the Mavericks (19...

Is Doc Rivers the right coach for the Celtics?

Doc Rivers tenure as the Celtics head coach has been tumultuous to say the least. I remember adamantly chanting at the then TD Banknorth Garden that Doc needed to be fired. His rotations were awful, he subbed too late, and it felt like he almost forgot he was coaching during the games. But we all know what happened in the end, winning one title and one dirty play by Andrew Bynum...

What should Doc Rivers do?

In-spite of his all-star status, there have been a few whispers about Rajon Rondo's ball-dominating ways. Pundits are suggesting that he holds the ball to long which causes the offense to become stagnant.  There are rumors of Courtney Lee being unhappy in Boston and Brandon Bass' recent complaints about his lack of touches seem to support the aforementioned Rondo charges...

O.J. Mayo Coming Up Short At Crunch Time Free Throws

O.J. Mayo has struggled at crunch time from the free throw line this season. In games that are within 5 points with under three minutes to go, Mayo is shooting just 66.7% from the line . Prior to this season, he was an 83.3% free throw shooter in the last minute of games when his team was within 5 points. He found himself there Thursday night vs. OKC and missed a game-tying charity...

Doc Rivers laughs off talk Celtics are better w/o Rondo

Via WEEI: The Celtics are now 2-0 since losing Rajon Rondo for the season with an ACL tear in his right knee. A vocal minority have speculated that perhaps this team might be better off without the services of the All-Star point guard, a notion the coach dismissed quickly on Thursday. “That’s silly,” Rivers said. “The bottom line is that you’d rather have him. But we...

Your morning dump….where Doc goes old school to replace Rondo

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. According to Rivers, NBA history is filled with examples of teams that took a community approach to bringing the ball up and setting up an offense. Rivers mentioned the Dennis Johnson/Danny Ainge backcourt, which...

Celtics better without Rajon Rondo? Doc: "That's silly."

On WEEI's Dennis & Callahan Show this morning, Boston's head coach Doc Rivers was asked if he thought his team might be better without it's star point guard.  Here's Doc's response: That’s silly. The bottom line is that you’d rather have him. But we do have other guys that can do different things. Having Courtney Lee and Avery [Bradley] gives you size...

Mavericks 109, Suns 99

O.J. Mayo scored 20 points to lead six Dallas players in double figures and the Mavericks, despite the absence of Dirk Nowitzki, added to their mastery of Phoenix with a 109-99 victory over the Suns on Friday night. Darren Collison added 19 points and Vince Carter 17 for the Mavericks, minus Nowitzki for the second game in as many nights because of a sore right hip. Shannon Brown...

BOSTON — Courtney Lee is the same place before every game. Suns' defense, intensity fade in loss to Mavs

PHOENIX Thanks to a calamitous fourth quarter that resembled many of those from the previous coaching regime, fans of the Phoenix Suns can postpone the Lindsey-sanity campaign. On a Friday night that could have ended with the Suns winning for the fourth time in Lindsey Hunters first six games as interim coach, the Dallas Mavericks' 35-24 fourth-quarter salvo led to a 109-99...

The Miami Heat are now 0-5 against the Top 4 teams in the Eastern Conference (Knicks (0-2), Bulls (0-1), Pacers (0-2)) – and 0-2 to the Indiana Pacers, losing to them by a combined 23 points this season. Ray Allen was held scoreless for just the 2nd and 3rd time in his 17-year career in 2 contests vs. the Pacers this season – but LeBron James and the Heat don’t seem to be concerned...
