The Lakers have always had a big man fetish since their Minnesota days. From George Miken, Kareem, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaq, Gasol and now add Dwight Howard to the list of 7 foot phenoms who made/will make the Lakers even more formidable. But the NBA has gone in and out of phases and as of now is it even necessary to have a big man on your team, yet alone two?  There’s that saying that you can never have enough size on a basketball team, I think it’s time to put that theory to the test. The Lakers are a unique case though, they’re going up against a power shift in positions, their age and the fact that maybe they’re ‘too stacked’. Today’s NBA is not ruled by big men. Consider domineering big men guarding the paint as the dinosaurs of the sports world, they’re veritably extinct and the age of the combo guard has taken over. The NBA of today is built off mid size guard play at the perimeter, with bulk scoring and the ability to get to the line and make a free throw. As we all know Dwigh...

Breaking Down the Dwight Howard to Lakers Deal and How It Effects the Boston Celtics

News came down late Thursday afternoon that Dwight Howard is finally leaving the Orlando Magic, heading to the Los Angeles Lakers in part of a four team deal involving the Magic, Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets. While it’s a major coupe for L.A.,  and Celtics fans are never happy when good things happen for the [...] [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my...

Shaq talks about Dwight Howard trade during Comic Con press conference (Video)

Over the weekend, NBA star Shaquille O'Neal was attending Comic-Con for some reason still not known to us but it gave some reporters the opportunity to talk about the Dwight Howard trade.Check out the below video of the Big Aristotle talking about the mega-trade that sent Dwight Howard to the city of angels in a rather comical way:(Courtesy of Total Pro Sports)

How Howard Trade Affects the Wolves

Dwight Howard will keep his beaming smile much to the chagrin of teams and fans across the league.  After a year of committing some of the biggest PR blunders in NBA history, Howard has found himself in exactly the position he had hoped for- competing for a championship in a highly lucrative market.   As part of a four-team trade on Friday, Howard became the newest center...

NBA Off-season: Winners and Losers

Howard is all smiles now that he’s out of Orlando Well, the NBA off-season dust has settled and most of the moving parts have come to rest. Although I wouldn’t exactly call this summer a power shift, I would say that the past couple months of player movements have altered the course of multiple NBA franchises. With that in mind, here’s a couple of winners and losers of this...

Dwight Howard is officially a Laker

You might as well put the Superman cape on the back of Kevin Durant, because the Thunder might be the only team that can prevent another Lakers’ dynasty. Dwight Howard was at long last traded to the Lakers from the Magic in a four team deal that also included the Nuggets and 76ers. Here’s how [...]

My thoughts on Dwight Howard joining the Lakers

Okay, so the "Dwightmare" is over!! The truth is it's just over for now. I'll explain why in a little bit. At least we know center Dwight Howard is not with the Orlando Magic anymore and is now a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. Howard was involved in a four-team deal that included the Magic, Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets. Here are the details...

Afternoon Delight: McKayla & KG are not impressed

One of the funnier moments from this past Olympics was the McKayla is not impressed phenomenon. It even has it's own website. A silver medal doesn't impress the young gymnast and apparently neither does the Lakers trade for Dwight Howard. KG of course is also not impressed with L.A.'s new clown. Related: KG to Howard: "Paint your face, clown!" About Afternoon...

Dwight Howard Trade Serves as Reminder that Magic Screwed Up by Firing Stan Van Gundy

Not to say I told you so, but I told you so. When the Orlando Magic fired head coach Stan Van Gundy in an attempt to appease Dwight Howard, a lot of wannabe devil's advocates tried to call the move something other than what it was: an absolutely stupid move borne of shortsightedness and ignorance. The devil's advocates thought they sounded smart when they insisted that the...

Dwight Howard Trade Makes Lakers Championship Contenders Again but Miami Heat Remain Favorites (Podcast)

Let's not go handing the next NBA championship to the Lakers just yet. Even with Dwight Howard in the fold along with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Steve Nash and Metta World Peace, there are plenty of question marks surrounding the Lake Show that would prevent the Forum Blue and Gold from raising another banner at the end of next season. Besides, LeBron James is still the best player...

No one is immune to the dog days of summer

Now that the Olympics are over, and while football is still an interminable number of weeks away, the sports news cycle has just about ground to a halt.  The baseball trade deadline has come and gone, the Dwight Howard saga has come to a merciful (and predictable) end, and there’s just not a whole lot [...]

While We’re Waiting… Super Teams, Cribbs’ Contract and Stirrups in CLE

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com. Yep. Good thing the new CBA fixed this. “When a child cries in the NBA, he gets to spank his parents. This is one lesson of the Dwight Howard saga, which is finally over...

The Bynum Bubble

So after having a couple of days to think things over, here's where I am with the Sixers' getting the second-biggest prize in the Dwight Howard Sweepstakes.Circumspect. Quiet. Even, dare I say, tactful. You see, Andrew Bynum is either:a) no worse than the second-best center in the NBA, and the clear best in the East, with 20-10 potential on the offensive end and shot-blocking...

Doug Collins on Bynum

While all the Dwight Howard talk has been about the Los Angeles Lakers don’t forget about the Philadelphia 76ers. 76ers head coach Doug Collins called the Olympics for NBA. During one of the broadcasts here is what he had to say about the four team trade. “When you think about adding Andrew Bynum, a big man who can score in the paint, rebound and block shots —...
