Does Victor Wembanyama’s Meteoric Rise Spell Trouble for the Spurs This Off-season?
Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports

We enter a new chapter of the San Antonio Spurs Rebuild with that, some new questions
arise. It’s no secret that Victor Wembynyama is a force to be reckoned with on the basketball
court, his arrival in San Antonio changed this team’s trajectory overnight.

The Spurs haven’t been anything to write home about in the post-Kawhi Leonard era, with two
play-in berths and an all-star appearance from the young star Dejounte Murray being the peaks
of the last five years for the historic franchise the front office flipped the switch in the summer of
‘22. Shipping Dejounte Murray to Atlanta for three first-round picks and picking up Jeremy
Sochan in the draft the Spurs seemed to be at the beginning of what was sure to be a long
off-season. Thanks to a certain Frenchman the Spurs are faced with a tough decision to make,
What Now?

San Antonio Spurs Future: Give Atlanta A Call

After watching a season of limited point guard play I’m sure Wemby and the front office are
foaming at the mouth to pair Victor with a lead guard of Trae Young’s caliber. Rumors have been
circulating for months after the Hawks’ subpar start to the season. To be fair the idea of not only
giving Wembynyama a great pick-and-roll partner but also pairing Trae Young with a
generational defender sounds like a match made in heaven. The only two hang-ups are San
Antonio is not known to be an active player on the trade market despite what recent years say

and how willing they’d be to part with the picks they acquired for Dejounte Murray (who’s
return to San Antonio via trade has been speculated by fans as well.)

San Antonio Spurs Future: Make a Splash in Free Agency

Although this free agency isn’t living up to par compared to past years there are some gems that
could really help Vic and Co. make that post-season push. No one has needed something as bad
as the Spurs need a point guard. Hopefully, Jeremy Sochan can return to his primary role as a
defensive pest/glue guy and the Spurs pick up someone more suited for the role.

Uniting Tyus Jones and brother Tre Jones may just sound like a wholesome idea but it could be
a great move for the Spurs to make. Tyus has spent the last season on a Wizards team that is also
in the middle of a rebuild of their own and is now an unrestricted free agent. Tyus Jones could be
an excellent addition to the team offering some much-needed play making as well as a level of
experience this team hasn’t had in the last couple of years. Jones was a key member of the
Grizzlies’ WCF run as well as an outstanding fill-in when Ja Morant missed time. He could be
the key to unlocking this Spurs offense.

San Antonio Spurs Future: Stay Pat

The least exciting and most likely option this summer is the Spurs do what they are known to do,
build through the draft. With a plethora of picks for the foreseeable future, San Antonio may
avoid the name-chasing route trading away assets that could be used to add to their impressive
young core. San Antonio historically is quite successful in the draft with guys like Kawhi
Leonard, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili all being drafted later than what their talents reflected

or even more recently with Celtics’ lead guard Derrick White who is a member of the Spurs
family. Spurs fans counting down the days to the offseason can rest assured the future is bright.
